The machine in the video is not a normal car that transforms into an airplane. It is XPENG AEROHT’s Land Aircraft Carrier: a six-wheeled electric road vehicle that carries a separate, foldable two-seat eVTOL aircraft in its rear compartment.

At the public demonstration around the China Airshow in Zhuhai in November 2024, the carrier opened its rear doors, released the aircraft, and allowed the aircraft’s landing gear and rotor arms to unfold. Once separated from the carrier, the six-rotor aircraft took off over Zhuhai. The spectacle is real, but the important qualification is that this was a demonstration of an emerging aviation system—not proof that China has put ordinary, unrestricted flying cars into consumer service.
What the video actually shows
The sequence is closer to launching a small aircraft from a mobile hangar than to a car sprouting wings.

- The six-wheeled ground vehicle arrives at a suitable launch area.
- Its rear compartment opens.
- The aircraft is moved out of the carrier.
- The aircraft’s landing gear and folded rotor arms deploy.
- The aircraft separates from the road vehicle.
- The two-seat eVTOL lifts vertically and flies independently.
XPENG says the separation and reconnection process is automated and can take approximately five minutes. That gives the system its headline appeal: the aircraft does not need to be transported to a separate airfield or hangar before every flight. The carrier functions as a road vehicle, transport platform, storage compartment and—according to the company—an onboard charging station for the aircraft.
It is two vehicles, not one transforming flying car
The Land Aircraft Carrier consists of two distinct machines:
| Module | What it does |
|---|---|
| Six-wheeled mothership | Drives on roads, transports the aircraft, stores it in a rear compartment and is designed to support deployment and re-docking. |
| Two-seat eVTOL | Unfolds its rotor arms and operates as a separate electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft. |
That distinction matters. The road vehicle cannot simply leave the highway and take off. The aircraft must first be extracted, unfolded and operated under the rules that apply to an aircraft. In practical terms, the system is a road-going aircraft carrier with a detachable personal eVTOL—not a six-wheeled automobile that itself becomes airborne.
The six-wheeled carrier is built like a mobile hangar
According to XPENG’s published description and reporting on the demonstration, the carrier is a triple-axle vehicle with two rear axles. It is approximately 5.5 meters long and about 2 meters high, placing it broadly in large-van territory despite its unusual six-wheel layout.
The ground module is reported to have:
- all-wheel drive;
- adjustable air suspension;
- rear-wheel steering; and
- a rear compartment large enough to carry the folded aircraft.
XPENG has also described the dimensions as suitable for the general footprint of a large van and compatible with underground-parking access. That does not mean every car park, ramp or garage will accommodate it. Height limits, turning radius, axle loads, charging equipment, fire rules and the requirements for safely removing an aircraft would still have to be checked at each location.
The aircraft has six rotors and two seats
The aircraft carried inside the mothership is a foldable, six-rotor eVTOL. Its arms retract for storage and unfold for flight. XPENG describes a carbon-fiber structure, a 270-degree polycarbonate cockpit, a single-lever control system and both manual and autonomous-flight development.
The company also says the aircraft uses redundancy for key systems including power, flight control, communications and operation. Those are manufacturer-reported design features. They should not be read as independent proof of reliability, crash safety or approval for unattended passenger flights.

The public demonstrations show that the aircraft can be deployed and crewed in a controlled setting. They do not establish that a customer can operate it without training, a qualified pilot, an approved route or permission to use a particular launch and landing area.
What XPENG claims about range and charging
The mothership is intended to do more than carry the aircraft. XPENG says it can recharge the eVTOL while the aircraft is docked. Earlier company material also described a target of up to 1,000 kilometers of ground range under the CLTC test cycle for the combined system and enough stored energy for as many as six flights.

- Accessories and collections: This product is very suitable for static accessories and can be used as an accessory next to a computer. For those who are passionate about collecting model car models, this is a great art collection.
Those figures are targets or company estimates, not independently verified real-world results. The CLTC figure is a test-cycle claim for the road vehicle; it should not be interpreted as the aircraft’s flying range.
XPENG’s current product presentation also displays aircraft information including a claimed range above 500 kilometers and speed above 360 km/h. The available material does not make it safe to apply those figures directly to every Land Aircraft Carrier configuration shown in the video. They may refer to a particular aircraft configuration or broader product information. Until XPENG publishes a final, configuration-specific specification sheet, those numbers should remain qualified rather than presented as settled performance.
From spectacular demonstration to production: where the project stood
The Land Aircraft Carrier has progressed beyond a computer rendering. XPENG AEROHT completed public crewed flight demonstrations, and reporting in January 2025 said the company had stated that the vehicle had received type certification.
Type certification is an important step, but it is not the same as permission to sell and operate an unlimited number of aircraft. Production certification and an airworthiness certificate are separate requirements. The aircraft also needs an operating framework covering pilots or operators, approved airspace, takeoff and landing sites, maintenance and passenger operations.
XPENG’s official timeline pointed to:
- a manufacturing base completed in 2025;
- type certification in 2025; and
- mass-production deliveries in 2026.
There is evidence of progress toward that schedule, but the wording matters. A Guangzhou Development District report dated November 5, 2025 said the first Land Aircraft Carrier flying vehicle had rolled off the production line on November 3. It described those initial vehicles as trial-production units for flight testing and performance verification, not ordinary customer deliveries. The same report described a planned annual capacity of 10,000 units, with an initial phase capacity of 5,000.
A later Guangzhou Development District report dated March 9, 2026 said aircraft had rolled off a batch trial-production line and that XPENG AEROHT had conducted multi-aircraft test flights at its Huangpu mass-production factory. That supports describing the program as having entered trial production and factory testing. It does not, by itself, establish mature mass-market transportation or broad public availability.

Interest has been substantial, but reported interest is not the same as delivered vehicles. TechCrunch reported approximately 3,000 intent orders in January 2025. Later reporting by the Associated Press said XPENG reported more than 7,000 global orders.
Those are company-reported order or intent figures. They should not be treated as completed sales, registered aircraft or vehicles already operating with customers.
Pricing is similarly unsettled. In January 2025, the product was publicly described as costing less than $300,000. Later reporting referenced a target price below RMB 2 million. Those descriptions may reflect different dates, markets or configurations, and the final cost could also be affected by taxes, certification, delivery and support arrangements. There is not enough evidence here to present a current U.S.-dollar retail price.

Why you cannot launch one from any parking lot
A flight demonstration is not a blanket operating authorization. A commercially usable eVTOL generally needs multiple layers of approval, including:
- Aircraft certification: evidence that the design meets the applicable aviation requirements.
- Production authorization: approval to build aircraft consistently at scale.
- Airworthiness approval: authorization for an individual aircraft to fly.
- Pilot or operator qualifications: the required training, licensing and operating procedures.
- Airspace permission: approval to use the intended routes and altitude.
- Site approval: a legal, suitable takeoff and landing location with appropriate safety controls.
- Maintenance and emergency procedures: inspection, battery, rescue and failure-response systems.
These requirements are especially significant for a vehicle designed to move between roads and the air. The carrier may be able to drive to a remote location, but that does not make the location an authorized vertiport. Nor does a five-minute automated deployment sequence eliminate the need to inspect the aircraft, secure the area, check weather and coordinate with air-traffic authorities.
Battery endurance and airspace remain major obstacles
The Land Aircraft Carrier addresses one practical problem—transporting an aircraft to a chosen area—but it does not remove the fundamental limitations of electric flight. Battery energy density, reserve requirements, payload, weather, temperature, charging time and the need for emergency landing options all affect how useful an eVTOL can be.
China’s wider low-altitude aviation sector also continues to face airspace-control and passenger-service challenges. The Associated Press reported that battery limitations and airspace controls remained significant barriers. It also reported a 2025 collision involving two XPENG eVTOL aircraft during an exhibition rehearsal. No one was hurt, according to that report, but a later exhibition canceled flying demonstrations. The incident involved XPENG eVTOL aircraft generally; it should not be described as a collision involving the exact Land Aircraft Carrier configuration unless separately established.

For the same reason, calling the Land Aircraft Carrier “self-flying” or “fully autonomous” goes beyond the available evidence. XPENG discusses automatic flight assistance and autonomous-flight development, but the public demonstrations and published reporting do not establish unrestricted autonomous passenger operation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What could it be used for?
XPENG has presented the system as more than a novelty for wealthy owners. Its proposed scenarios include:
- individual recreational travel;
- emergency medical evacuation;
- short-distance rescue across obstacles;
- highway accident response; and
- high-rise emergency evacuation pods.
These are proposed applications, not evidence that the Land Aircraft Carrier is already performing each role in commercial service. Emergency use would require especially demanding certification, trained operators, dependable dispatch, medical equipment, weather limits and coordination with existing emergency agencies.
A more immediate use case is likely to be controlled demonstrations, training and tourism. XPENG has reported agreements involving more than 130 flight camps, with plans to exceed 200 locations by the end of the relevant year. That points toward organized flight experiences and demonstration sites, but it does not mean all those locations are open to the public or that the aircraft is approved for general tourism operations.

What happens next?
The critical test is no longer whether the aircraft can lift off in a carefully managed demonstration. It is whether XPENG AEROHT can build the system repeatedly, certify it for production, establish safe operating procedures and create enough approved infrastructure for customers to use it legally.
The most realistic near-term picture is therefore narrower than the headline suggests:
- trial-production aircraft undergoing factory and flight testing;
- controlled flight camps and demonstration events;
- specialized aviation, rescue or public-service evaluation; and
- limited initial availability in China before any possible international expansion.
Routine commuting from a suburban driveway is a much bigger step. It would require not just a capable aircraft, but also an approved place to take off, an approved destination, a trained operator, sufficient battery reserves, reliable weather information and a regulatory system able to manage thousands of low-altitude flights.
The bottom line
China’s “craziest flying car” is a genuine and unusually advanced engineering demonstration. XPENG AEROHT’s Land Aircraft Carrier combines a six-wheeled road-going mothership with a detachable two-seat, six-rotor eVTOL. The carrier can transport the aircraft to a launch area, deploy it in roughly five minutes according to XPENG, and recharge it while docked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the XPENG Land Aircraft Carrier transform from a car into a plane?
No. The Land Aircraft Carrier is made of two vehicles: a six-wheeled road vehicle and a separate aircraft that it carries in a rear compartment.
When did XPENG demonstrate the Land Aircraft Carrier flying?
The public demonstration around the China Airshow in Zhuhai took place in November 2024. Subsequent reports described crewed demonstrations, trial-production vehicles and factory test flights, but not unrestricted consumer operation.
Can Americans buy and fly the Land Aircraft Carrier?
Not based on the evidence available here. China was reported as the planned initial market, while international markets were to be considered later. The demonstration does not establish U.S. sales or FAA approval.
How much does the Land Aircraft Carrier cost?
XPENG has cited a target below RMB 2 million and earlier reporting described a price below $300,000, but those figures may relate to different dates, markets or configurations. A current, final retail price is not established by the available evidence.
Can the flying aircraft launch anywhere the carrier can drive?
No. A demonstration flight does not authorize flights from arbitrary roads, driveways or parking lots. Aircraft, production and airworthiness approvals, pilot qualifications, airspace permission and approved takeoff and landing sites are all relevant.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Land Aircraft Carrier is a road-going six-wheeled carrier that launches a separate two-seat eVTOL. It has progressed to crewed demonstrations and trial production, but it should still be understood as an emerging, regulated aviation system—not a flying car that ordinary drivers can freely buy, drive and launch anywhere.
