Alef Aeronautics has released video of its full-scale Model Zero prototype performing a brief, low-altitude, untethered vertical flight over a parked Lexus. It is a meaningful proof-of-concept for a road-capable electric aircraft—but not evidence that a certified, production-ready flying car is now available.
The footage supports the description “prototype flying-car flight demonstration.” Alef’s more ambitious claim that it represents the first documented, verifiable flight of a true flying car depends on a narrow definition of “flying car,” and the edited video does not settle every competing claim.
What the video actually shows
In the footage reported by New Atlas on March 2, 2025, the Model Zero sits on a closed-off public street with what appears to be a driver aboard. After an edit, it rolls a short distance down a hill. The video then cuts away from the takeoff itself and resumes with the vehicle hovering over a parked Lexus before settling on the other side.
A separate clip shows the prototype driving slowly over a dirt surface. That demonstrates some ground mobility, but it does not show a continuous road-to-air-to-road journey.

The distinction matters. Viewers are not shown an uninterrupted sequence from stationary vehicle to takeoff to landing. The footage contains edits, has no audio, and depicts a tentative, low-altitude test. It is evidence that the full-scale prototype performed a short untethered flight; it is not a complete independent test record.
Alef’s website describes the footage as “actual real video” of a flying-car test and presents the concept as a vehicle that can drive on streets, take off vertically, and fly above traffic. Those are the company’s descriptions of its technology, not an independent certification or performance assessment.
What does “first flying car” mean here?
Alef CEO Jim Dukhovny’s claim is narrower than the headline phrase “first flight” might suggest. Alef defines the achievement as the first documented and verifiable flight of an actual car capable of vertical takeoff and untethered flight.
That is not the same as claiming the first electric aircraft to fly, the first electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft, or the first roadable aircraft ever flown. Several other projects have achieved related milestones:
- Samson Switchblade and Klein Vision AirCar have flown, but they require a runway rather than vertical takeoff.
- Aska’s A5 has driven and taken off in separate demonstrations, while reported flight testing included safety tethers.
- XPeng’s larger prototype flew in 2022, although the available video was considered less conclusive by New Atlas.
So the most accurate wording is: Alef says the footage shows the first documented, untethered vertical flight of a road-capable flying car. That is a significant and contestable milestone—not an uncontested declaration that Alef has built the world’s first fully operational consumer flying car.
Model Zero is closer to a multicopter than a normal car
The vehicle in the video is called Model Zero. Its car-like body encloses or surrounds multiple electric lift propellers, giving it the appearance of a car while making its demonstrated flight behavior more like a wheeled multicopter drone.
That architecture is useful for proving that a vehicle can lift vertically without a runway. It does not, by itself, demonstrate efficient forward cruise, long-range flight, highway-speed driving, automated obstacle avoidance, or safe operation near buildings, vehicles, and pedestrians.

How the planned Model A is different
Alef’s proposed customer vehicle is called Model A, not Model Zero. The company’s preorder page describes Model A as a low-speed vehicle intended to fit a regular traffic lane, parking space, and garage. It is also intended to take off vertically and use a gimbaled cabin to keep occupants stabilized.
According to Alef’s published targets, Model A is expected to offer approximately:
- $299,999 in purchase price;
- 110 miles of claimed flight range;
- 200 miles of claimed driving range.
These are company-published targets, not independently verified test results. The preorder page also labels Model A a Low Speed Vehicle. That designation implies important road-use restrictions in most U.S. states; it should not be interpreted as ordinary highway-car capability.
Alef has offered a general preorder queue for $150 and a priority queue for $1,500. A reservation is not a sale, delivery, certification, or guarantee that a production vehicle will be available on a particular date. The reviewed materials do not establish a final delivery schedule, completed production certification, or customer deliveries.
The hardest part has not been demonstrated yet
The short hover is only one part of the engineering problem. Alef’s proposed Model A is intended to transition from vertical lift into wing-borne forward flight. In the company’s concept, the cabin remains stabilized while the vehicle’s body rotates into a sideways configuration so its wings can generate efficient cruise lift.
That transition is substantially more complex than hovering a multicopter a few feet above the ground. The released Model Zero footage does not demonstrate it.

Before a concept like this could become a practical transportation product, engineers would need to prove several demanding capabilities:
- Controlled transition flight: reliable movement from vertical takeoff to forward cruise and back again.
- Energy efficiency: enough battery energy to carry the structure, motors, occupants, safety equipment, and reserve power.
- Road performance: predictable steering, braking, visibility, stability, and compliance with applicable low-speed-vehicle rules.
- Obstacle detection: dependable sensing and avoidance around wires, trees, buildings, vehicles, and people.
- Noise control: acceptable sound levels during takeoff, landing, and low-altitude operation.
- Failure management: safe behavior after a motor, battery, flight-control, or propulsion-system fault.
- Weather tolerance: controllability in wind, rain, heat, cold, and other real-world conditions.
Alef says Model A will include propulsion redundancies, obstacle detection and avoidance, and a ballistic parachute. Those could be important safety features, but the sources reviewed do not independently verify their performance or show them operating in a certified aircraft.
A successful flight is not the same as regulatory approval
In the United States, a prototype flying once does not automatically make it legal for unrestricted passenger flight or ordinary public-road use. The Federal Aviation Administration explains that an airworthiness certificate authorizes an aircraft to operate in flight and distinguishes between standard and special airworthiness certificates.
A special airworthiness certificate can cover limited uses such as research and development, showing compliance, crew training, exhibition, and market surveys. An experimental test flight therefore belongs to a different regulatory category from routine commercial passenger service.
Nothing in the reviewed material establishes that Model Zero or Model A has received a standard FAA type certificate, approval for unrestricted public operation, or authorization to carry passengers routinely. Nor does the fact that the test occurred on a closed-off street establish permission to operate the vehicle in normal traffic.
The road and air sides of the product would also involve different regulatory questions. A vehicle being designed to fit a lane or garage does not automatically make it compliant with every state’s motor-vehicle rules, while an aircraft’s ability to lift off does not establish that it can operate in public airspace wherever its owner chooses.

Those figures indicate interest in the concept, but they are not independently audited sales numbers. They do not represent delivered vehicles, certified production aircraft, or paying customers already using flying cars. The reviewed sources also do not provide evidence of a completed production run.
Alef has described a longer-term Model Z concept with four seats, claimed ranges of about 400 miles on the road and 200 miles in the air, and autonomous-flight ambitions around 2035. Model Z remains a future concept. It should not be confused with the Model Zero prototype seen in the video or the planned Model A preorder vehicle.
Why this demonstration still matters
It would be easy to dismiss the test because it is brief and heavily edited. That would also miss what the footage does establish. Alef has shown a full-scale, car-shaped electric prototype leaving the ground without a visible tether and hovering over another vehicle before landing. That is more consequential than a computer rendering, a small drone, or a conventional aircraft that cannot take off vertically.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Alef’s flying car really fly?
The released footage supports the conclusion that Alef’s full-scale Model Zero prototype performed a brief, low-altitude, untethered flight. However, the video is edited and skips the takeoff, so it does not show a continuous flight sequence from start to finish.
Is Alef’s Model A available to buy?
Alef is accepting reservations and lists an expected price of $299,999 for Model A. The reviewed information does not establish that the vehicle is certified, in production, delivered to customers, or available for unrestricted road and air operation.
Is this the world’s first flying car?
Not under every definition. Alef’s claim is specifically about the first documented, verifiable untethered vertical flight of a road-capable car. Other roadable aircraft and eVTOL projects have flown, but their designs and test conditions differ.
Can Alef’s vehicle fly over public roads?
The demonstration took place on a closed-off street, and the reviewed sources do not establish authorization for unrestricted public-road or public-airspace operation. A prototype flight is separate from FAA airworthiness certification and applicable motor-vehicle approval.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Alef’s video is credible evidence of a notable prototype milestone: a full-size, car-shaped electric vehicle briefly hovering without a tether. It is not yet evidence of a certified personal aircraft, a highway-ready car, or a production vehicle customers can safely and legally operate. “First documented untethered vertical flight of a road-capable flying car” is defensible; “the world’s first fully operational flying car” is not.
