A laboratory study reported a 60-minute reaction for turning waste frying oil into biodiesel. That hour covers only the transesterification stage—not the full time needed to separate and purify the fuel. The researchers also reported applying the resulting biodiesel to a diesel engine, but the study does not establish that it is suitable for every vehicle or meets current road-fuel standards.
What does “60 minutes” mean?
In a study published in 2013, researchers ran a transesterification reaction using waste frying oil at 50 °C, with stirring at 200 rpm. They used 200 ml of oil and tested different methanol-to-oil ratios and sodium hydroxide concentrations. The reported 60 minutes is the duration of that reaction under the study’s laboratory conditions, not the time from used oil to finished fuel. The study record and methods describe the experiment.
What happens after the reaction?
Once the reaction ended, the researchers transferred the mixture to a separating funnel and left it overnight. This allowed two layers to form: biodiesel, also called fatty acid methyl ester, and glycerol. The biodiesel then required further purification, including removing residual methanol and water and washing out remaining catalyst. The paper’s methods state: “After one hour, the mixture was transferred to a separating funnel and allowed to separate overnight to produce two dissimilar layers that is, fatty acid methyl ester (biodiesel) and glycerol.”
A separate environmental assessment of two waste-oil production cases also describes a 40–60-minute mixing stage. That duration, too, refers to part of a larger production process rather than the complete production of finished fuel. The assessment record describes those case studies.

Does the biodiesel power vehicles?
The study’s title and report describe applying the biodiesel to a diesel engine. That is evidence of a reported engine application, not proof of compatibility with ordinary road vehicles in general. The available study record does not establish that the fuel meets current road-fuel standards or that it can be used in any diesel car without regard to its specifications.
Why does the oil’s condition matter?
The experiment concerned waste frying or cooking oil—not used motor oil. Feedstock quality can affect the process: a 2025 research article notes that high free fatty acid and moisture content can hinder transesterification. The BMC Chemistry article discusses these feedstock challenges.

No. The reported work used filtered and dried waste oil, methanol, sodium hydroxide, controlled heating and stirring on laboratory equipment, followed by overnight separation and additional purification. It documents a laboratory experiment; it does not validate a safe at-home process or a consumer-ready kit. A production project described by IPT Group likewise includes collection and processing beyond the reaction itself; its stated 30–60-minute separation time varies with the source oil and is not a universal production-time claim. IPT Group’s project description outlines that example.
