WA’s “worst” personalised number plates in a July 2023 report included GEN3CID, SAUC3D, RAMP4GE, F4K3 T4X1 and BUYAGRAM. But the report did not establish an official contest or objectively scored list of the state’s “best” plates: its examples and rejection figures describe a particular period, not a current ranking.
Which WA personalised plates were reported as the worst?
PerthNow reported on 12 July 2023 that almost 1,000 of more than 37,000 personalised-plate applications in the preceding financial year had been rejected. It named GEN3CID, SAUC3D and RAMP4GE among the rejected combinations. The report said F4K3 T4X1 referred to a pornography site and BUYAGRAM referred to purchasing drugs. These are examples from that report, not a complete list or a current account of individual applications. PerthNow’s 2023 report
The headline’s “best” framing should be read as a news feature, not an official award or ranking. The available reporting supplies no scoring method or competing list of top plates, so it does not support naming a definitive best combination.
Why can a personalised plate application be rejected?
PerthNow described a plate review group assessing applications and said combinations could be rejected for drug or alcohol connotations, anti-law references, or content considered generally offensive or inappropriate for public display. The report described the examples above in that context; it did not publish a comprehensive decision list or explain the reasoning for every individual string.

What the figures do—and don’t—show
The more-than-37,000 applications and almost-1,000 rejections are figures PerthNow reported for the financial year preceding its July 2023 story. They should not be treated as current annual totals. The same report said men accounted for 71 per cent of customised-plate holders, the average holder age was 41, and nearly 11 per cent of custom plates were associated with businesses; those are also figures attributed to the report’s period, not present-day population data.

A later but different measure appears in the Department of Transport’s 2024–25 Annual Report: more than 40,500 sets of optional and personalised plates were sold in that financial year. This is sales of plate sets, not applications or rejections, so it cannot be directly compared with PerthNow’s earlier application count. Department of Transport WA annual reports
How to apply for a personalised plate in WA
WA Government guidance says buyers can choose a design and check whether a desired word, letter or number combination is available before ordering. Applications may be made online, at a service centre or regional agent, or by post, subject to the stated requirements. The government estimates manufacture takes three to four weeks. Optional and personalised plates are not available for taxis, buses and other vehicles that require specific identifying plates. Confirm the current process and requirements with the WA Government plate application service before ordering.

Fitting and transferring personalised plates
Fitting the plates
Transport WA says department-issued plates do not come with screws. If a bike rack or mobility device obstructs the rear plate, its guidance says an auxiliary plate is needed. Check Transport WA’s PlatesWA information for current plate and display guidance.
Transferring the plates
Personalised plates have different transfer conditions from other optional plates. Transport WA says they are not issued with a Certificate of Right to Display and Trade, and cannot be transferred through the ordinary optional-plate process. Once approved, they may be assigned only to a vehicle registered to the person to whom the plates were issued or an immediate family member. If the vehicle is sold with the personalised plates attached, the plates transfer with it through the vehicle-transfer process. Confirm the rules that apply to your transaction with Transport WA’s sell-or-transfer-plates guidance.
