The AMC Eagle SX/4 is a persuasive early relative of today’s coupe SUVs: a fastback liftback with extra ride height and four-wheel drive. But calling it the first coupe SUV goes further than the available evidence. The SX/4 arrived for 1981 as part of the broader AMC Eagle line, and its period identity was a Spirit-based liftback—not a formally established “coupe SUV.”
What was the AMC Eagle SX/4?
The SX/4 was a compact, raised two-door liftback in AMC’s Eagle range. Its sloping rear profile gave it a sporty silhouette, while Eagle four-wheel drive and increased ride height supplied capability beyond an ordinary passenger hatchback. AMC’s advertising described the Eagle as “the sports car that doesn’t always need a road,” a line that captures the unusual mix of road-car shape and all-weather intent.

The SX/4 was based on the smaller AMC Spirit. That distinguishes it from the first Eagle body styles, which were based on the larger Concord. Consumer Guide’s histories cover the original Eagle range and the later Spirit-based models: 1980 AMC Eagle and 1981–83 AMC Eagle.

AMC introduced the broader Eagle line for the 1980 model year; the specialist history dates its sale to August 1979. The company added smaller Spirit-based Eagle models for 1981, including the SX/4 liftback and the Kammback. The SX/4 continued through model year 1983 and was dropped for 1984.

The Eagle’s engineering story began earlier than its showroom debut. The SAE catalog record for Roy Lunn’s 1980 technical paper says the vehicle was prototyped in 1972, then further developed into the 1980-model-year Eagle. That prototype date refers to the Eagle program, not the SX/4’s production launch: Roy Lunn’s SAE paper record.
Why does it resemble a modern coupe SUV?
The comparison rests on three traits: a fastback-like roofline, a raised stance and four-wheel drive. Together, those features make the SX/4 look like an ancestor of later vehicles that blend coupe-like styling with SUV or crossover cues. Car and Driver’s period assessment, as transcribed by the specialist history, said the car “doesn’t require pavement to be fun.”

“Coupe SUV,” however, is a modern analogy rather than an established period classification for the SX/4. The more precise description is a raised, four-wheel-drive Spirit liftback or hatchback. AMC’s own “sport coupe” language, reported in the specialist history, helps explain the styling but does not prove that the company or buyers treated it as a coupe SUV in the modern category sense.

Was the SX/4 the first coupe SUV?
It is fair to call the SX/4 an early crossover-like vehicle and a plausible stylistic precursor to today’s coupe SUVs. It is not safe to present it as the proven first. Establishing that would require a systematic comparison with other earlier vehicles, including their shapes, platforms, ride heights, drivetrains, launch dates and the names their makers used. The available historical record supports the SX/4’s resemblance and significance, but does not settle priority across every possible predecessor.
Its strongest claim is more specific: from 1981 to 1983, AMC sold a Spirit-derived fastback liftback that combined a raised ride height with four-wheel drive—an uncommon package that anticipates some of the logic behind later coupe-shaped crossovers.
