The 1994 Isuzu Pickup is commonly cited as the last carbureted vehicle sold new in the United States. The claim refers specifically to a base, two-wheel-drive truck with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine and a two-barrel carburetor—not every 1994 Isuzu Pickup. Automotive sources say the engine switched to fuel injection for the 1995 model year, but the “last ever” conclusion is not backed by an official, comprehensive U.S. sales record.
Which 1994 Isuzu Pickup configuration had a carburetor?
Autotrader describes the carbureted example as the base two-wheel-drive pickup, with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 96 horsepower and fitted with a two-barrel carburetor. The 96-horsepower specification is reported by Autotrader in 2017. The evidence does not establish that every 1994 trim, drivetrain, or market configuration used this setup. Autotrader’s account
Autotrader says the engine received fuel injection for the 1995 model year. That model-year change is why the 1994 truck is cited as a final example; it does not mean carburetors disappeared from vehicles already on the road.
Why does the answer depend on what counts as a vehicle?
“Last carbureted car” and “last carbureted vehicle” are different claims. A passenger car is not the same category as a light truck, and the Isuzu example is a pickup. Autotrader identifies several later passenger-vehicle holdouts than the often-mentioned 1990 Subaru Justy, including 1990 GM station wagons, the base 1990 Honda Prelude, the 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and a fleet-oriented Ford Crown Victoria P72 variant through model year 1991. Engineer Fix likewise distinguishes a 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer passenger-vehicle claim from the 1994 Isuzu Pickup claim for a vehicle of any type. These are secondary accounts, not an official exhaustive vehicle census. Autotrader · Engineer Fix

Comparisons can also go astray when they mix model years, configurations, or fuel-delivery systems. To assess a “last” claim, check four things: whether the vehicle is a passenger car or truck, its model year, whether it uses a carburetor or injection, and which engine and drivetrain configuration is meant.
Is throttle-body injection a carburetor?
No. A throttle-body injection (TBI) unit may look similar to a carburetor, but it uses an injector in the throttle body to deliver fuel. A carburetor mechanically meters and draws fuel into the engine using airflow. Similar appearance does not make TBI a carburetor, so the distinction matters when deciding which vehicle qualifies as the last carbureted one. Autotrader explains the difference.

How certain is the “last ever” claim?
It is best treated as a commonly cited historical conclusion, not a proven universal fact. Autotrader’s author, Aaron Gold, qualified the statement “so far as I can tell” and described the Isuzu as the last carbureted vehicle sold in North America. That wording is broader geographically than the U.S. claim, so it should not be silently treated as a U.S.-only proof. Engineer Fix also identifies the 1994 Isuzu Pickup as the last U.S.-sold vehicle of any kind, but neither account supplies an official all-sales record establishing that no other qualifying vehicle was sold.
The practical answer remains the 1994 Isuzu Pickup when “vehicle” includes light trucks and the claim is framed as the commonly cited final U.S. example. Keep the qualification attached: the cited carburetor belongs to a specific base 2WD configuration, and available accounts do not establish every 1994 truck’s equipment.
