A Tesla Cybertruck prototype was reported stopped by the roadside near Los Altos Hills, California, in August 2023, but the report did not confirm that it had broken down or been abandoned. It records a witness account and photographs, not a diagnosis or an explanation from Tesla.

What happened near Los Altos Hills?

In a report published August 14, 2023, Futurism’s Noor Al-Sibai recounted a sighting first described by Electrek. A reader said they saw someone they presumed was a Tesla worker looking under the hood of a Cybertruck prototype. The reader turned around to get a closer look; on returning, they said the truck was alone and covered by an unmarked tarp. The account led to close-up photographs, including images of the undercarriage and suspension.

These details are attributed to the reader; the report does not independently establish the person’s identity or the truck’s mechanical condition. Electrek reporter Fred Lambert’s post, reproduced by Futurism, described it as “seemingly broken down on the side of the road in Los Altos Hills.” The qualifier matters: a vehicle stopped at the roadside is not, by itself, proof of a failure.

Was the Cybertruck actually broken down?

The report does not establish that it was. It gives no diagnosis, account of a failed component, or confirmation that the prototype could not move under its own power. The apparent roadside stop and the witness’s description support saying it looked as if something might be wrong; they do not confirm a mechanical breakdown.

Why was it left by the road?

That remains unanswered. The report says the reader returned to find the truck alone under a tarp, but it does not establish why the vehicle was unattended, whether anyone had left it there intentionally, or what the tarp was for. Calling it “abandoned” captures the impression created by the account, not a verified explanation of Tesla’s actions or roadside procedure.

Futurism said it contacted Tesla but reported no company response. The article noted that test vehicles can break down during testing as general context, but did not confirm that testing—or a breakdown—explained this particular stop.

What does this incident say about Cybertruck reliability?

On its own, very little. This is a single reported sighting of a prototype, not a reliability study, a confirmed fault report, or evidence of a broader pattern. The article provides no relevant breakdown statistics, and this incident cannot establish a failure rate or a general conclusion about Cybertruck reliability.
