The wrongful-death trial over the 2018 crash that killed Apple engineer Walter Huang began in California on April 8, 2024, according to Ars Technica. Huang’s family alleged that defects in his Tesla Model X and inadequate Autopilot warnings contributed to his death. Tesla disputed responsibility and argued that driver inattention caused the crash. The opening-day report describes competing claims, not a jury verdict.
What happened in the Walter Huang crash?
Huang died on March 23, 2018, when his Tesla Model X struck a concrete highway divider on US Highway 101 near the State Highway 85 interchange in California. Ars Technica reported the vehicle was traveling 70 mph and that Autopilot was engaged. The report also said the Model X had drifted toward the highway gore at least twice in the four weeks before the fatal crash.
What did Huang’s family allege, and how did Tesla respond?
| Issue | Huang family’s allegations | Tesla’s reported position |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle and safety systems | The 2017 Model X lacked adequate crash-avoidance and automatic emergency-braking protections. | Tesla disputed responsibility for the crash. |
| Autopilot and driver attention | The family alleged Tesla was negligent in its warnings about Autopilot. | Tesla argued Huang was inattentive, was not holding the steering wheel in the final seconds, and was playing a video game on his phone. |
These are claims by the parties, not findings by the jury. The opening-day account does not establish which account a court accepted.
What did the NTSB say about the crash?
According to Ars Technica’s account of the National Transportation Safety Board’s 2020 investigation, the NTSB criticized Tesla’s marketing and safeguards for keeping drivers engaged. It also criticized Caltrans because a damaged crash attenuator had not been replaced. The article describes the board’s conclusions as assigning shared blame to multiple parties; those conclusions were not to be presented to jurors as a verdict. Jurors would hear factual findings instead.

NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt emphasized the continuing driver-responsibility requirement for driver-assistance systems: “Every vehicle sold to US consumers still requires the driver to be actively engaged in the driving task, even when advanced driver assistance systems are activated. If you are selling a car with an advanced driver assistance system, you’re not selling a self-driving car. If you are driving a car with an advanced driver assistance system, you don’t own a self-driving car,” as quoted by Ars Technica.

The April 8, 2024 report does not say that a jury found Autopilot responsible—or that it cleared Tesla. It reports that the trial was getting underway and summarizes the family’s allegations, Tesla’s defense, and the NTSB investigation. No final court disposition is established by that account.
