Walmart and autonomous-trucking company Gatik launched driverless middle-mile deliveries in Bentonville, Arkansas, in 2021. The trucks carried customer orders between a Walmart dark store and a Neighborhood Market—not from a store to shoppers’ homes. Contemporaneous Axios reporting put the driverless route at seven miles; the primary Walmart and Gatik announcements confirm the operation but do not state that distance.
What Walmart’s self-driving trucks did
Walmart was the retail customer, and Gatik operated the autonomous delivery route. The multi-temperature box trucks moved Walmart customer orders between a dark store and a Neighborhood Market in Bentonville. This was a middle-mile logistics operation: goods moving between facilities in a retail network, rather than a customer-facing autonomous vehicle service.
Gatik announced the driverless milestone on November 8, 2021, and said the operation had begun in August. It described repeated public-road runs multiple times a day, seven days a week. In this announcement, “driverless” meant that the safety driver had been removed from behind the wheel. The announcement does not establish whether remote monitoring or other operational support continued.
Why the route is described as seven miles
Axios contemporaneous coverage described the Bentonville driverless loop as seven miles. That figure should be attributed to the reporting: Walmart’s December 2020 announcement gives a two-mile distance for the earlier pilot, while the reviewed Walmart and Gatik announcements about the 2021 driverless milestone do not specify the later route’s length.

Walmart’s 2020 announcement also said the earlier pilot had accumulated more than 70,000 operational miles with a safety driver. Those are historical figures for the earlier pilot, not evidence of the distance driven by the later driverless operation.
How this differed from Walmart’s Louisiana plan
Walmart’s planned Louisiana deployment was a separate project, not an extension of the Bentonville driverless loop. The announced plan covered a 20-mile route from New Orleans to Metairie, connecting a Supercenter with a pickup point, and was initially to operate with a safety driver.

Is the Bentonville route still operating?
The exact current status of the Bentonville Walmart-Gatik route is not established by the available sources. As of October 8, 2026, Gatik’s website describes driverless operations in Texas, Arizona, and Arkansas, while Walmart’s autonomous transportation careers listing describes strategy, partners, pilots, and potential scaling. Neither confirms that this specific Bentonville route remains active. The 2021 milestone is therefore best understood as a historical deployment, not proof of a current service.
