The VW Rabbit is the name Volkswagen used for the Golf in the U.S. early in the model’s history—not a separate, unrelated car line. The Rabbit arrived in the U.S. in February 1975; Volkswagen’s modern U.S. comparison is the 2026 Golf GTI, a performance-focused member of the same Golf family, not a direct trim-for-trim successor.
What is a VW Rabbit?
“Rabbit” was Volkswagen’s American name for the Golf. Volkswagen’s U.S. heritage page describes the Golf as having “its American name—the Rabbit.” The name identifies the U.S.-market Golf in that early period, rather than a separate model family unrelated to the Golf.
Volkswagen introduced the Golf in 1974 as the successor to the Beetle. In the words of Volkswagen designer Klaus Bischoff, quoted in the company’s historical publication, “The step from Beetle to Golf was truly revolutionary.” That is Volkswagen’s characterization of the change, not an independent evaluation.
When did the Rabbit arrive in the U.S.?
Volkswagen’s 2013 historical publication dates the Rabbit’s U.S. launch to February 1975. In 1976, it reports more than 100,000 Rabbit sales in the United States in a single year. That is a U.S. annual-sales figure, not a worldwide production total.

Westmoreland production
Volkswagen says assembly at its Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, plant began in April 1978. The plant was Volkswagen’s first U.S. factory, and it assembled the Rabbit as well as the Rabbit GTI. Volkswagen’s heritage page says the facility eventually assembled more than 1.1 million Rabbits.
Volkswagen’s historical publication separately reports 6.99 million first-generation Golf vehicles, including derivatives. This is a worldwide Golf-family total; it should not be read as Rabbit-only U.S. sales or production.

How does the Rabbit compare with the 2026 Golf GTI?
The 2026 Golf GTI is a useful current U.S. reference because it is a Golf-family hatchback with a performance focus. It is not a direct trim-to-trim replacement for the original Rabbit: the cars belong to different eras and serve different roles. The figures below are Volkswagen’s published U.S. model-year specifications and price, which may change.
| Measure | Rabbit historical context | 2026 Golf GTI, U.S. |
|---|---|---|
| Name and role | U.S. name used for the Golf in its early North American market history. | Current U.S. Golf GTI; a performance-oriented Golf-family hatchback. |
| Engine output | Not stated here for a specific Rabbit year or trim. | 2.0L TSI, 241 hp and 273 lb-ft, according to Volkswagen’s U.S. model page. |
| Starting price | No inflation-adjusted or comparable U.S. Rabbit price is established here. | $34,590 starting MSRP, as listed by Volkswagen for the 2026 U.S. model; subject to change. |
| Fuel economy | No directly comparable figure for a specific Rabbit year or trim is established here. | EPA-estimated 24 mpg city, 32 highway and 27 combined, as listed by Volkswagen for the 2026 U.S. model. |
| Cargo capacity | No comparable figure for a specific Rabbit year or trim is established here. | 19.9 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 34.5 cubic feet with them folded, according to Volkswagen’s U.S. model page. |
| Touchscreen | Not applicable as a comparable modern equipment measure. | Standard 12.9-inch touchscreen, according to Volkswagen’s U.S. model page. |
These specifications show how the modern GTI is equipped and rated; they do not establish how it drives compared with a Rabbit. A meaningful performance or price comparison would need a specific Rabbit year and trim, comparable test conditions, and appropriate treatment of inflation, equipment and market.

Why do GTI figures differ by market?
Volkswagen’s U.S. page lists the 2026 Golf GTI at 241 hp. That is a U.S.-market figure and should not be mixed with the European figures in Volkswagen’s 2026 European GTI material: 195 kW (265 PS) for the standard GTI, 221 kW (300 PS) for the Clubsport, and 239 kW (325 PS) for the Edition 50. The units and market differ; these are not interchangeable specifications for one globally uniform model.
How the Rabbit, Golf and GTI fit together
The Rabbit name belongs to the Golf’s early U.S. story. The GTI is a performance version within the Golf family, not another name for every Golf or Rabbit. Volkswagen says the first Golf GTI launched in 1976 with 81 kW (110 PS), and reports more than 2.5 million GTIs produced to date. That cumulative GTI figure is distinct from both the Westmoreland Rabbit total and the worldwide first-generation Golf-family total.
Volkswagen marked the Golf’s 50th anniversary in 2024, referring to the Golf’s 1974 debut. The GTI’s 50-year anniversary is in 2026, measured from its 1976 launch. Those anniversaries mark different milestones.
