Volvo Car India expects electric vehicles to account for a larger share of its sales in 2027, as the EX90 electric SUV and ES90 electric sedan join its range. But the company has not published a percentage goal: Managing Director Jyoti Malhotra said he expects the share to rise and declined to give a number. The two cars were scheduled to launch together on October 12, 2026, with prices due to be announced then; that date had not yet arrived when the October 5 report was published.
How much could Volvo’s EV share rise in India?
No specific 2027 percentage has been disclosed. In a Moneycontrol interview published October 5, 2026, Volvo Car India Managing Director Jyoti Malhotra said, “If you were to look at, let’s say 2027, I believe it should definitely go up from where we are today. It will be much better.” Asked about the scale of the increase, he said, “I can’t comment on percentage yet.” That is an expectation, not a quantified forecast or formal company commitment. The same report put EVs at about a quarter of Volvo’s India sales at the time. The figure is a reported snapshot, not a stated 2027 baseline with a defined measurement period. Volvo has not specified how much higher the share should be or by when within 2027.
Why EX90 and ES90 could lift the share
The planned additions broaden the kinds of electric Volvos available in India: the EX90 is a large SUV, while the ES90 is a sedan. Moneycontrol described Volvo’s existing India range as the EX30 and EC40 EVs, alongside the XC60 and XC90 mild hybrids. With the two new EVs, the range would grow from four models to six—four electric and two mild-hybrid, according to the report.

EX90: an electric option at the large-SUV end
Volvo positioned the EX90 as an electric alternative in the large-SUV part of its range. Malhotra cited the company’s view that premium SUV demand is an opportunity; that is Volvo’s rationale, not independent evidence of buyer demand.
ES90: a sedan added to the electric range

What is known about the India launch, assembly and specifications
Volvo said the EX90 and ES90 would launch together on October 12, 2026, and that prices would be announced on that date. This was the announced schedule in the October 5 reporting, not confirmation that the launch or price announcement had occurred. Volvo said both cars would be assembled at its Hoskote facility near Bengaluru. Malhotra described local assembly as central to the company’s approach to competitive pricing, but no India prices were available in the reporting before the scheduled announcement. Moneycontrol said both models use Volvo’s SPA2 architecture.

Autocar India reported global-market configurations that include 92 kWh single-motor and 106 kWh twin-motor versions. Those figures do not establish which battery or powertrain variants India will receive; the cited reporting did not confirm India-specific range, equipment or configurations.
What the reported sales and registration figures show
Moneycontrol’s October 5, 2026 report gave historical figures for Volvo and the broader luxury-car market. These are secondary-report figures, not independently checked here against original registration records. Sales and registrations are distinct measures, so the registration counts below should not be read as deliveries or sales.

No India-specific transition date was stated. Malhotra said, “The end goal is still the same. We still want to become an all-electric car company.” Moneycontrol noted that Volvo’s global company had moved away from its earlier 2030 all-electric deadline as adoption rates differed across markets. The stated long-term ambition should not be read as a current fixed timetable for India.
