Volvo Cars stopped producing diesel-powered cars in March 2024. The company attributed the move to its electrification strategy, customer demand, emissions regulation, climate action and urban air quality—not to Tesla. Volvo’s announcement covered its cars, not every diesel engine or vehicle worldwide.
When did Volvo stop making diesel cars?
Volvo Cars announced on September 19, 2023, that it would end production of all its diesel-powered car models by early 2024. Its 2024 annual report later recorded that diesel-car production ceased in March 2024. The company’s March 27 retrospective said its Ghent plant built its last diesel V60 in early February, followed by the last diesel XC90 at its Torslanda plant later that month. Volvo’s 2023 announcement and its 2024 retrospective describe the transition.
Why did Volvo phase out diesel cars?
Volvo presented the decision as part of a broader shift away from combustion engines and toward electrification. Its announcement said it had decided to exit development of new combustion engines and had sold its stake in Aurobay in 2022. It also cited changing customer demand, tighter emissions regulation, climate concerns and diesel’s contribution to nitrogen-oxide pollution in cities. The company’s statement describes these drivers but does not assign a separate share of the decision to each one.
Volvo’s chief executive, Jim Rowan, characterized electric powertrains this way: “Electric powertrains are our future, and superior to combustion engines: they generate less noise, less vibration, less servicing costs for our customers and zero tailpipe emissions.” That is Volvo’s own assessment, not an independent comparison. Rowan’s statement appeared in the announcement.

Did Tesla make Volvo stop making diesel cars?
Volvo’s public explanation does not credit Tesla with causing the decision. The company instead pointed to its own strategy and the demand, regulatory and environmental factors it described. That means “thanks to Tesla” is not supported as a factual explanation of Volvo’s phase-out. The company’s statements do not establish whether Tesla had any indirect influence on the wider automotive market.
What exactly did Volvo stop producing?
The announcement concerned diesel-powered Volvo car models. It should not be broadened into a claim that Volvo stopped making every diesel engine or that all diesel vehicles worldwide disappeared. Volvo’s 2024 report gives useful context for its changing lineup: fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars together accounted for 46% of the company’s total sales in 2024. That is a company-reported figure for that year and those two categories combined; it is not a current sales figure or a direct comparison with diesel sales. Volvo’s 2024 annual report reports the share.

What about Volvo’s 2030 all-electric plan?
In its 2023 announcement, Volvo described a plan to sell only fully electric cars by 2030. That statement records the ambition announced at the time; it does not establish that the target remains Volvo’s current plan as of October 8, 2026. The diesel phase-out itself, by contrast, was completed in March 2024.
