The production design is a series-hybrid aircraft: two electric pusher motors on the aft fuselage, with a thermal engine that acts as a range extender and recharges the batteries in cruise. VoltAero says takeoff, taxi and initial flight are all-electric. The company’s published material does not show that the aircraft has flown, been certified or entered service, so this article treats the June 2025 event as a configuration reveal, not a completed milestone.
What VoltAero actually unveiled
The June 2025 event showed the Cassio 330 in the form VoltAero intends to build, which the company describes as the first production aircraft in its Cassio family. Earlier material from the program described a different powertrain, so the change matters for anyone comparing announcements from different years. The aircraft is a conventional takeoff-and-landing design, meaning it is meant to operate from existing airport infrastructure rather than from specialised vertiport or short-field facilities.
How the series-hybrid production design works
The propulsion chain
In VoltAero’s description, the two electric pusher motors on the aft fuselage drive the aircraft. Energy comes from onboard batteries. A thermal engine sits in the chain as a range extender: it does not drive the propellers directly in the way a parallel hybrid does, but generates power that recharges the batteries during cruise. VoltAero states that taxi, takeoff and initial flight use all-electric propulsion, so the thermal engine is not the primary source of power during the phases of flight that demand the most energy.
Redundancy claims
VoltAero describes two separate battery strings and independent motor winding channels as part of the redundant architecture. These are the manufacturer’s own design descriptions. They have not been presented as the findings of an independent safety review, and no regulator has published a statement confirming them.

How the production design differs from the earlier concept
The early Cassio 330 was a parallel hybrid, in which an electric motor and a thermal engine were combined in line to drive a single propeller. The production definition moves to a series architecture and changes how the two power sources interact. The table below sets out the two configurations side by side, with the date of each claim.
| Attribute | Earlier concept (April 25, 2024 announcement) | Production configuration (June 15, 2025 unveiling) |
|---|---|---|
| Propulsion architecture | Parallel hybrid | Series hybrid |
| Electric motor | 180 kW Safran ENGINeUS 100 | Two electric pusher motors on the aft fuselage (power ratings not restated in the 2025 material) |
| Thermal engine | 150 kW, Kawasaki-derived; drives the propeller with the motor | Range extender that recharges batteries in cruise; does not drive the propellers |
| Combined power | 330 kW total, as stated in 2024 | Not stated as a single figure in the 2025 material |
| Electric-only phases | Not described in the 2024 announcement | Taxi, takeoff and initial flight, according to VoltAero |
| Certification target | Late 2025, stated in April 2024 | No updated target stated in the 2025 material reviewed |
| Certification basis | Not stated in the 2024 announcement | Developed with EASA and aligned with the latest CS.23 normal-category specifications, according to VoltAero |
Because the two configurations differ in architecture and ratings, power figures from the 2024 announcement should not be applied to the production aircraft.

Published specifications
VoltAero’s 2025 leaflet lists the figures below. They are the manufacturer’s published numbers. They have not been independently verified or demonstrated in flight.
| Specification | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum seating | 6 total (5 passengers and 1 pilot) | VoltAero 2025 leaflet |
| Maximum takeoff weight | 2,526 kg | VoltAero 2025 leaflet |
| Basic empty weight with batteries | 2,026 kg | VoltAero 2025 leaflet |
| Payload | 500 kg | VoltAero 2025 leaflet; consistent with the weight figures above (2,026 kg + 500 kg = 2,526 kg) |
| Maximum speed | 333 km/h | VoltAero 2025 leaflet |
| Cruise speed | 289 km/h | VoltAero 2025 leaflet |
| Maximum range | 1,200 km with no reserve | VoltAero 2025 leaflet; the no-reserve condition is part of the figure |
| Takeoff and landing distance | 600 m | VoltAero 2025 leaflet |
| Maximum operating altitude | 12,000 ft | VoltAero 2025 leaflet |
The announcement also describes modular potential for passenger, cargo and medical-evacuation missions, and speaks of a pilot and up to five travelers. The range figure is the most important to read carefully: 1,200 km is a maximum with no fuel or energy reserve held back, so it is not a practical planning figure for a real flight.

Certification status: what is and is not established
The certification question is the one readers most often need answered, and the honest answer is that the company’s published material does not establish it. In April 2024, VoltAero said ground-based certification testing had begun on the earlier parallel-hybrid powertrain and that late 2025 was its target for aircraft certification. That date has now passed. The material available for this article does not show that the aircraft has been certified, does not confirm a first flight of the production configuration, and contains no regulator statement on the Cassio 330’s status. The 2024 target should be read as a company target from that date, not as a milestone that was reached.
The production design was described as developed in coordination with EASA and aligned with the latest CS.23 normal-category specifications. That is a statement about design intent. It is not a certificate, and it should not be read as EASA approval.

Commercial context and intended uses
The HM Aerospace agreement
VoltAero’s press archive records a June 18, 2025 agreement under which Malaysia’s HM Aerospace would acquire 15 Cassio 330s, with an option for 15 more, for pilot training. Delivery is conditional on EASA certification and on validation by Malaysia’s civil aviation authorities. This is an announced conditional agreement. It is not a delivery, an operating fleet or an available training service.
Possible applications
VoltAero lists regional commercial transport, air taxi and charter, private ownership, cargo, postal delivery and medical evacuation as possible uses for the Cassio family. These describe what the company intends, not operations that are already under way.

Ownership change on the company website
VoltAero’s official website currently displays the banner “AURA AERO ACQUIRES VOLTAERO.” The company material available for this article does not give the date or terms of that acquisition, so no details are given here.
What the company’s chief executive said
Jean Botti, VoltAero’s CEO and Chief Technology Officer, said at the June 15, 2025 unveiling: “As we take another step toward the Cassio 330’s production, our strategy remains unchanged: using safe and efficient electric-hybrid propulsion and power technologies that are realistically available today, applying them to a conventional takeoff/landing aircraft for sustainable regional transportation using existing airport infrastructure.” That is a statement of the company’s own strategy. It is not an independent assessment of the aircraft’s safety or readiness.
Reading the announcements in the right order
- June 2025 production unveiling: the current configuration, a series hybrid with electric taxi, takeoff and initial flight.
- June 2025 HM Aerospace agreement: conditional on certification and validation, with no delivery date stated in the material reviewed.
- April 2024 certification-testing announcement: a parallel-hybrid configuration and a late-2025 certification target, both now superseded or past.
When a later release and an earlier one disagree on architecture or ratings, the later production configuration is the one VoltAero currently describes.
Readers searching for the Cassio 330 should expect the next verifiable milestones to be a certification decision by the relevant authorities and a first flight of the production configuration. Neither had been confirmed in the company material available for this article.
