Volonaut Airbike: Is the Jet-Powered Star Wars Speeder Bike Real?

The Volonaut Airbike is a real human-carrying jet-propelled prototype, but the viral 124-mph claim is not the same as its current 63-mph listed specification. Here is what the videos, price, safety claims and U.S. ultralight rules actually show.

Yes—the Volonaut Airbike appears to be a genuine, human-carrying flying prototype, not merely CGI or an AI-generated concept. Volonaut has published multiple videos showing a rider taking off, hovering, maneuvering, and landing in a compact, motorcycle-style vertical-takeoff aircraft.

That answer needs an important qualification: the evidence supports calling it a real flying prototype, not a certified, mass-produced, everyday flying motorcycle. The machine is available to reserve for a listed $880,000, but its current production status, delivery schedule, independent safety validation, and practical operating capability remain unproven publicly.

What is the Volonaut Airbike?

The Volonaut Airbike is a single-seat vertical-takeoff-and-landing personal aircraft with motorcycle-style seating. It is not a conventional motorcycle, does not appear to have a road-driving function, and does not use anti-gravity technology. Volonaut describes it as a compact aircraft powered by redundant jet turbines rather than exposed conventional propellers.

The rider sits in an open position above the propulsion system and controls the aircraft through a redundant flight computer and stabilization system. The company says the system provides hands-free stabilization. The available footage also appears to show computer-assisted hovering and thrust vectoring, although Volonaut has not published a detailed description of the control architecture.

In other words, the Airbike is closer to a personal VTOL aircraft or hoverbike than to a flying version of a road motorcycle.

What the videos actually prove

The strongest evidence comes from the sequence of official videos rather than from a single viral clip:

  • April 30, 2025: Volonaut released its official launch video, showing a rider flying over open terrain. The launch presentation described a top speed of up to 200 km/h, or 124 mph.
  • July 22, 2025: Volonaut published observer-view flight footage showing takeoff and landing from the ground. The company presented the video as raw footage with real engine audio.
  • July 31, 2025: A later test-riding video explicitly identified the aircraft as a prototype and showed additional flight footage, including claims about maneuvering in tight spaces.

The second and third videos make a staged render or ordinary concept animation much less plausible. New Atlas, which had expressed skepticism about the original launch material, later described the observer footage as showing takeoff, landing, heat distortion, engine noise, and apparent thrust vectoring.

However, the videos are still company-produced promotional material. New Atlas noted that the July footage contains cuts and is not one continuous, unedited flight. That does not prove a hoax, but it does mean the videos are not a substitute for an independent flight-test report, airworthiness assessment, or certification evidence.

An evidence-based verdict

The available evidence is consistent with a real flying prototype. It does not independently verify every performance, safety, or production claim made by the company.

The footage does not establish that the Airbike can:

  • remain airborne for the full advertised 10 minutes in every weather and loading condition;
  • reach 200 km/h in its current or future customer configuration;
  • continue flying safely after an engine, computer, sensor, or control failure;
  • operate over roads, cities, or public areas;
  • meet a completed certification or airworthiness standard;
  • be delivered to customers on a confirmed schedule.

Volonaut has also claimed that its videos contain no CGI, AI, or green-screen effects. That is a company statement, not independently verified test evidence, so it should be attributed rather than repeated as established fact.

Prototype speed versus current listed speed

The most confusing part of the Airbike story is that Volonaut’s materials present two very different top-speed figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Launch or prototype claim Current official specification
Top speed Up to 200 km/h / 124 mph 102 km/h / 63 mph
Context Performance claim made in the April 2025 launch presentation Figure listed in the current specification table and associated with the U.S. FAA ultralight category
Status Demonstration or prototype configuration Current published specification for the aircraft being presented for preorder

The current official Airbike page still contains broader marketing language referring to speeds of up to 124 mph, while its technical specification table lists 102 km/h, or approximately 63 mph. Volonaut does not clearly explain whether the difference reflects a software limit, a regulatory configuration, a change in hardware, or the distinction between a prototype and a customer aircraft.

The careful conclusion is therefore: 200 km/h was an earlier launch or prototype claim, while 102 km/h is the current listed specification associated with the FAA ultralight claim. It would be misleading to present 124 mph as the confirmed speed of the current preorder aircraft.

How does the jet-powered Airbike fly?

Volonaut says it replaced exposed propellers with compact, redundant jet propulsion. The turbines appear to direct thrust downward to generate lift, while computer-controlled stabilization and thrust vectoring control the aircraft’s attitude and movement.

That is why the Airbike can take off vertically without a runway. It is not a motorcycle with wings, and it is not a ducted-fan multicopter in the usual visible sense. The rider is essentially sitting on a small thrust-producing aircraft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Volonaut has not publicly disclosed the exact engine model, number of turbines, total thrust rating, fuel-tank capacity, intake arrangement, exhaust temperature, or detailed flight-control system. In reporting by New Atlas, founder Tomasz Patan said he could not yet disclose the thrust figure, although he described the available thrust as sufficient to provide redundancy.

A basic weight calculation illustrates the engineering challenge without pretending to measure the aircraft’s actual performance. At the company’s maximum pilot mass, the 30 kg aircraft and 95 kg rider total 125 kg before fuel. That combined mass weighs approximately 1.23 kilonewtons under Earth gravity. The propulsion system must produce more than that just to hover, with additional thrust required for fuel, acceleration, control authority, and disturbances such as wind.

The official page lists diesel, biodiesel, Jet-A1, and kerosene as possible fuels and says refueling takes less than one minute. It does not publish fuel consumption, fuel capacity, operating cost, or emissions data. Those omissions matter because turbine fuel burn and the need to carry fuel directly affect endurance and practical range.

Volonaut Airbike specifications

The following figures are the current claims on Volonaut’s official specification page, reviewed in the dossier as of August 9, 2026:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Specification Official figure
Occupants One
Empty mass 30 kg / 66 lb
Maximum pilot mass 95 kg / 209 lb
Current listed top speed 102 km/h / 63 mph
Earlier launch speed claim Up to 200 km/h / 124 mph
Maximum flight time 10 minutes
Propulsion Redundant jet turbines
Listed fuels Diesel, biodiesel, Jet-A1, and kerosene
Refueling time Under one minute
Flight controls Redundant flight computer and stabilization

The 10-minute maximum flight time is more important to practical use than the headline speed. Volonaut does not publish a range figure, and maximum flight time is not necessarily achievable with every pilot weight, fuel choice, altitude, temperature, wind condition, or maneuvering profile.

There is also little apparent payload margin. The listed 95 kg pilot limit is close to the weight of an average adult plus clothing and protective equipment, while fuel and any required operational equipment must also be accounted for within the aircraft’s design limits. The public specification does not explain how the 30 kg empty mass is calculated or what equipment is included.

Is the Volonaut Airbike safe?

The answer depends on whether the question concerns design features claimed by Volonaut or independent evidence that the complete aircraft is safe. Those are not the same thing.

Safety-related features claimed by the company

  • Redundant jet propulsion.
  • A redundant flight computer and stabilization system.
  • Hands-free stabilization.
  • Computer-assisted hovering.
  • Automatic or assisted takeoff and landing claims reported in secondary coverage.

Redundancy can reduce the consequences of a single failure, but it does not by itself establish overall aircraft safety. The public material reviewed for this article does not provide independent engine-out demonstrations, published failure-mode analysis, structural test results, or a documented emergency procedure.

Important safety information that remains publically unresolved

  • Independent airworthiness or safety assessment.
  • Engine-out and partial-failure test results.
  • Flight-control and sensor-failure behavior.
  • Emergency landing procedures.
  • A parachute or ballistic recovery system.
  • A crash cage or other occupant-protection structure.
  • A formal pilot-training syllabus.
  • Noise and exhaust measurements.
  • Maintenance intervals and inspection standards.
  • Insurance requirements and availability.

The absence of published information does not prove that the aircraft has none of these systems. It means only that buyers and readers cannot independently assess them from the currently available public material.

The rider’s open position is another practical safety concern. Unlike the Jetson ONE, which uses a surrounding frame cage, the Airbike does not appear to include a comparable protective structure. The pilot is exposed to the environment and has limited visible protection from a hard landing, collision, debris, or hot exhaust areas.

Can you fly it without a pilot’s license in the United States?

Possibly—but only if the final aircraft genuinely qualifies as a powered ultralight and the flight complies with all applicable rules. Volonaut’s statement that no pilot license is required in the United States is not blanket permission to fly the Airbike anywhere or in any configuration.

Under 14 CFR §103.1, a powered ultralight must meet requirements including:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • carrying only one occupant;
  • being used for recreation or sport;
  • having no U.S. or foreign airworthiness certificate;
  • weighing less than 254 pounds empty, excluding specified safety devices;
  • carrying no more than 5 U.S. gallons of fuel;
  • not exceeding 55 knots calibrated airspeed at full power in level flight;
  • having a power-off stall speed of no more than 24 knots.

Volonaut’s current figures—one occupant, 30 kg empty mass, and 102 km/h—appear to be framed around those ultralight limits. But the legal classification must apply to the actual final aircraft and its actual operation, not merely to a website description. The faster 200 km/h claim would not fit comfortably with the 55-knot powered-ultralight speed limit, which is one reason the company’s current 102 km/h figure is legally significant.

For a qualifying Part 103 ultralight, 14 CFR §103.7 removes normal requirements for a pilot certificate, medical certificate, aircraft airworthiness certificate, and aircraft registration. The FAA also explains the pilot-license point in its ultralight FAQ.

That does not make the aircraft unrestricted. Part 103 also requires:

  • No congested-area operation: the aircraft cannot be flown over a congested city, town, settlement, or open-air assembly of people under §103.15.
  • Controlled-airspace authorization: prior ATC authorization is required in Class A, B, C, D, and certain Class E airspace under §103.17.
  • See and avoid: the operator must maintain vigilance, yield to all aircraft, and follow the right-of-way requirements in §103.13.
  • Visual operation: the pilot must operate with visual reference to the surface under §103.21 and comply with visibility and cloud-clearance rules under §103.23.

So, no pilot certificate does not mean no training is advisable, no local permission is needed, no insurance is required, or that the Airbike can be used as an urban commuter. It also does not make the aircraft street legal.

What are the rules in Europe and Poland?

The U.S. Part 103 conclusion cannot simply be exported to Europe. EASA explains that uncertificated ultralight and microlight aircraft falling within relevant exemption categories are generally handled under national rules. Aircraft within EASA’s scope may involve permits, certification, registration, and nationally issued pilot licensing.

That means a buyer in Poland or another European country must check the category assigned by the relevant national aviation authority. The fact that Volonaut frames the Airbike around U.S. ultralight rules does not establish that a customer can legally fly it in Europe, from private property, over roads, or near populated areas.

Is the Airbike actually for sale?

Yes, in the limited sense that Volonaut is accepting reservations and advertising a future-build purchase process. It is not presented as an aircraft that a customer can order from ordinary inventory and take home immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The current official preorder page describes three stages:

  1. Stage 01 — $2,000: a non-refundable reservation fee. The page says this does not obligate the customer to purchase the aircraft.
  2. Stage 02 — $80,000: a deposit intended to secure a build slot. Volonaut describes it as refundable until the later purchase stage, subject to the terms on the preorder page.
  3. Stage 03 — $798,000: the final payment, linked to final assembly, delivery, and training at a U.S. facility.

The listed total is $880,000. That figure should not be confused with a confirmed delivery price unless the final purchase agreement says so. The public preorder page does not state a firm delivery date, production quantity, independently verified delivery history, complete warranty terms, insurance arrangements, or a mature customer service and maintenance network.

Volonaut’s company updates on LinkedIn also refer to claimed 2026 U.S. test flights. Such updates may indicate continued development, but they are not the same as a published certification report or evidence of routine customer deliveries.

What should a potential buyer ask before reserving one?

A $2,000 reservation is not the same financial commitment as the later deposits, but the buyer should still request written answers before paying. The most important questions are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which exact aircraft configuration is covered by the current 102 km/h specification?
  • Does the 200 km/h figure apply only to an earlier prototype?
  • What is the verified empty weight of the production aircraft, including required safety equipment?
  • What are the fuel capacity, fuel-burn rate, practical range, maximum altitude, and climb rate?
  • What are the published power-off stall speed and operating limitations?
  • What happens after the loss of one turbine, a flight computer, a sensor, or a control actuator?
  • What independent structural and flight testing has been completed?
  • What training is required, how long does it last, and what qualification does it provide?
  • What are the maintenance intervals, replacement parts, service locations, and expected operating costs?
  • What warranty and insurance options are available?
  • What is the expected delivery schedule and how many aircraft will be built?
  • What are the exact refund mechanics for each payment stage?
  • Can the aircraft legally operate in the buyer’s country and intended location?

Is it practical transportation?

Based on the published figures, the Airbike is better understood as an extreme recreational aircraft than as practical personal transportation.

The biggest limitation is endurance: the official maximum flight time is only 10 minutes. There is no published range, and the real usable flight time would depend on pilot weight, fuel load, weather, maneuvering, reserve requirements, and the flight profile. A quick refueling claim does not solve the problem of where the aircraft can legally take off, land, refuel, and be maintained.

Other practical limitations include:

  • one-person capacity;
  • very high purchase price;
  • open-air rider exposure;
  • likely significant jet noise and exhaust, although no measurements are public;
  • unknown fuel burn and operating cost;
  • restricted operating areas under Part 103 in the United States;
  • no demonstrated road-driving capability;
  • no published infrastructure plan for storage, recovery, maintenance, or emergency response;
  • no established consumer delivery record identified in the reviewed sources.

The design does have appealing characteristics: a remarkably low published empty mass, a compact single-person form, no exposed conventional propellers, rapid refueling, and computer-assisted stabilization. It is also visually much closer to a Star Wars-style speeder bike than most multicopter eVTOL concepts. Those advantages do not remove the limitations of short endurance, turbine operation, exposed seating, and restrictive airspace rules.

Is it the world’s first flying motorcycle?

That claim should be treated as marketing rather than settled history. Human-carrying personal VTOL aircraft and hoverbike projects existed before the Airbike.

Volonaut can reasonably present the Airbike as an unusually compact, motorcycle-like aircraft using jet propulsion without visible traditional propellers. That is a narrower and more defensible description than calling it the first flying motorcycle or first personal VTOL aircraft ever built.

The verdict: real prototype, not yet a flying car

The Volonaut Airbike passes the narrowest version of the reality test: a person has apparently flown a working, jet-propelled prototype. The official videos, observer footage, engine noise, heat distortion, takeoffs, landings, and later test-riding material make it far more than a computer-generated concept.

It does not yet pass the broader consumer-product test. The current public information does not independently establish certification, routine production, delivery history, complete safety validation, practical range, or unrestricted legal operation. The current specification also lists 102 km/h—not the widely repeated 200 km/h—as the relevant top-speed figure.

For a reader deciding whether this is a real Star Wars-style vehicle, the clearest three-part answer is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Real flying prototype: yes, the evidence supports that conclusion.
  • Preorderable aircraft: yes, Volonaut advertises staged reservations totaling $880,000.
  • Street-legal, broadly usable personal transport: no. It is an aircraft with short endurance and significant regulatory, safety, and practical limitations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Volonaut Airbike CGI or AI-generated?

The available evidence is consistent with a real aircraft carrying a human pilot. Volonaut has released launch, observer-view, and test-riding footage showing takeoffs, landings, engine noise, and apparent thrust effects. The videos are edited company promotional material, however, so they do not independently verify every performance or safety claim.

How much does the Volonaut Airbike cost?

Volonaut lists a total price of $880,000: a $2,000 non-refundable Stage 01 reservation, an $80,000 Stage 02 build-slot deposit, and a $798,000 final payment. The preorder page does not establish a firm delivery date or a record of completed customer deliveries.

Is 124 mph the Airbike’s current top speed?

Not necessarily. The April 2025 launch video claimed up to 200 km/h, or 124 mph, while the current official specification table lists 102 km/h, or 63 mph, and connects that figure with the U.S. ultralight category. Volonaut does not clearly explain the difference.

Can the Volonaut Airbike be driven on public roads?

There is no demonstrated road-driving function, and the Airbike is presented as a personal aircraft rather than a road-legal motorcycle. Even in the United States, qualifying Part 103 operation is subject to restrictions on congested areas, controlled airspace, visibility, and the purpose of the flight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Volonaut Airbike is real in the engineering sense that a rider has flown a working jet-propelled prototype. It is not yet publicly demonstrated as a certified, mass-produced, everyday flying motorcycle. Treat the $880,000 offer as a future-build preorder, treat the 124-mph figure as an earlier prototype claim, and treat the U.S. no-license statement as conditional on Part 103 compliance—not as permission to fly anywhere.
