It was an operational validation flight—not the passenger trial that Volocopter and Groupe ADP had hoped to stage from a floating platform on the Seine during the Paris Olympics. That demonstration did not happen because aircraft certification was delayed, with the motors at the center of the issue.
What happened near Paris
The August 8 flight took place at a purpose-built vertiport at the Aerodrome of Saint-Cyr-l’École. Volocopter and airport operator Groupe ADP were validating how the aircraft and ground operation worked together. The flight was crewed, but no passengers took part. New Atlas reported the flight and the abandoned Olympic passenger-trial plan.
The original plan was to conduct a passenger trial from a floating platform on the Seine during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Certification delays, centered on the aircraft’s motors, prevented that from happening. The Olympic-period flight near Paris was therefore a test of operations, not the debut of an air-taxi service.

These activities can help validate the aircraft’s interaction with its operating environment, but they are distinct from aircraft type certification. The 2024 report said the test series was due to conclude at the end of that weekend; that was the plan reported at the time, not confirmation of its eventual completion.
Why a crewed test flight is not a passenger service
A pilot being aboard does not mean the aircraft is cleared to carry paying passengers. The 2024 validation flights were conducted without passengers while the VoloCity awaited certification. Groupe ADP deputy CEO Edward Arkwright said at the time: “For now, test flights are carried out without passengers, but once the aircraft is certified, we will test emergency medical flights with AP-HP (Ile-de-France University Hospital Centre).” The statement described a future plan contingent on certification; it is not evidence that medical flights have since begun. The report quoted Arkwright and described the validation program.

VoloCity’s certification outlook
Volocopter’s January 2026 update said the company expected the VoloCity to receive European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification in 2027. That is the company’s forward-looking target, not confirmation that certification has been granted. Volocopter’s news page carries company updates.
Volocopter’s current VoloCity page describes a two-seat aircraft with 18 rotors and says it has completed more than 2,000 test flights across multiple prototype iterations. That flight count is the company’s own figure, not an independently reported tally. Volocopter’s VoloCity page.

VoloXPro is a different aircraft
Volocopter’s April 2026 VoloXPro announcement concerns a separate two-seat electric ultralight multicopter, not the VoloCity that flew near Paris in 2024. The company said German ultralight certification for VoloXPro was planned for the end of 2026. That target does not establish VoloCity’s certification status or change the 2027 expectation Volocopter gave for that aircraft. Volocopter’s news page.
