Subaru has reported substantial Japan production and described tariff uncertainty and mitigation measures, including using available trade programs and optimizing regional manufacturing. Those statements do not show that a particular vehicle escaped tariffs, establish a tariff-evasion motive, or quantify a tariff-driven increase in Japan sourcing.
What Subaru has said about tariffs and manufacturing
In May 2025, Subaru Corporation said uncertainty over U.S. tariff policy made it difficult to provide a reasonable earnings forecast for fiscal 2026. Its results release also mentioned construction at the Yajima Plant in preparation for in-house battery-electric vehicle production. In an October 24, 2025, SEC-filed exhibit, Subaru of America described mitigation steps that included leveraging available trade programs and optimizing its regional manufacturing footprint to bring production closer to consumers, including through its Japan facility. This is evidence of the company’s stated approach, not proof that a specific model or component qualified for a trade program or received different tariff treatment. How much Subaru produced in Japan
For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, Subaru reported producing 602,000 units in Japan and 345,000 overseas. These are company-wide production totals, not a breakdown of vehicles exported to the United States or sold there. They cannot establish whether Japan-built vehicles made up a larger share of Subaru’s U.S. sales, let alone whether any change was caused by tariffs. Why “skirting tariffs” goes beyond the evidence
Optimizing factory locations and using an available trade program are not, by themselves, evidence of evading tariffs. The company statement describes mitigation and regional manufacturing choices; it does not say that Subaru was circumventing customs rules. Nor do the available figures identify the applicable tariff rate for each vehicle, the treatment of particular parts, or the effect of a trade program on a specific model.
The distinction matters: production in Japan, export from Japan, and a vehicle’s tariff treatment are different facts. A reliable model-level answer would need to identify the destination market and assembly plant, the relevant vehicle or component’s eligibility for a trade program, and the tariff treatment in force when it was imported. It would also need to distinguish an announced plan from actual production, export, or retail sales.

What analysts say about the Forester
An Associated Press report quotes AutoForecast Solutions vice president Sam Fiorani describing the Forester as one of relatively few imported models that remain exceptions to U.S. production. That offers context about the model’s import status, but it is an analyst’s observation—not Subaru’s explanation for its sourcing choices or evidence of a tariff-driven shift. - How many additional vehicles, if any, Subaru sourced from Japan because of tariffs.
- Whether a particular vehicle or component qualified for a trade program and what effect that had on its tariff treatment.
Subaru maintains an archive of production, domestic-sales, and export results, but an archive landing page is not itself evidence of a current shift in U.S. model allocations. Any claim about a recent change needs the relevant dated release and model-by-market data.
