Volkswagen’s 50th-anniversary Golf GTI is the Golf GTI EDITION 50, a production model with 239 kW (325 PS) and 420 Nm. The first Golf GTI arrived in 1976, making 2026 its 50th year. Volkswagen announced the Edition 50 in 2025 and said orders had opened in some European markets that October; the announcement does not establish current availability or pricing in every country.
What is the Golf GTI EDITION 50?
The EDITION 50 is a special version of the gasoline-powered Golf GTI, created to mark the model’s 50th year. It is distinct from Volkswagen’s electric GTI plans: in December 2025, the company described the ID. Polo GTI as its electric GTI for 2026. The Edition 50 itself is a production Golf GTI, not a concept or a future electric model.
Volkswagen said it had produced more than 2.5 million GTI models worldwide since the first Golf GTI in 1976. Brand CEO Thomas Schäfer described the GTI as “a way of life” for fans as well as a performance model; that is Volkswagen’s characterization, not an independent assessment.
How powerful and fast is the Edition 50?
Volkswagen’s October 28, 2025 order announcement lists 239 kW (325 PS), 420 Nm of torque, a 0–100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds and a 270 km/h top speed. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. At the time of that announcement, Volkswagen called it the most powerful production GTI.

The car uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, a MacPherson front axle and a four-link rear axle, according to Volkswagen’s launch information. In its January 2026 media-drive material, the company listed the regular GTI at 195 kW (265 PS) and the Clubsport at 221 kW (300 PS), placing the Edition 50 above both on stated output.
What does the Performance package add?
The standard Edition 50 comes with DCC adaptive chassis control and 19-inch wheels, according to Volkswagen’s international media-drive page. The optional Performance package is aimed at more focused driving and changes several components:

Volkswagen’s June 2025 launch release said the package reduces weight by approximately 25 kg. That figure is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independently verified measurement. The earlier Nürburgring test vehicle used the optional package.
What is the Edition 50’s Nürburgring record?
Volkswagen’s newsroom listing, updated May 7, 2026, reports a 7:44.523-minute lap of the 20.832-kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife. Volkswagen describes this as the fastest lap by a front-wheel-drive production vehicle. It is a manufacturer-reported record claim in that category.

The record has a chronology: in April 2025, Volkswagen test and development driver Benjamin Leuchter recorded 7:46.13 minutes in a near-production test vehicle. Volkswagen’s June 20, 2025 release called that the fastest road-approved Volkswagen at the time. The later 7:44.523 time is the newer claim, and the two should not be treated as the same result or category.
