Yes—Volkswagen is restoring physical controls for selected functions in its new ID. interiors, starting with the ID. Polo. But it is not getting rid of touchscreens: the new cockpit pairs buttons and a rotary audio control with large digital displays. Volkswagen describes the change as a response to customer feedback and a push for more intuitive operation, rather than calling its earlier touchscreen approach a failure.
Which Volkswagen models are getting buttons again?
ID. Polo
Volkswagen announced the new cockpit design on January 3, 2026, saying it debuts in the all-new ID. Polo and will shape the cockpits of upcoming ID. models. The announcement describes a specific set of physical controls in the Polo, but does not name every future model that will receive the same dashboard arrangement. Volkswagen’s announcement frames the approach around customer feedback, intuitive controls, and updated materials.
ID.3 Neo
In an interior description published April 15, 2026, Volkswagen documented a similar direction in the ID.3 Neo: physical climate controls, a hazard switch, structured steering-wheel buttons, and a rotary audio control. The announcement is evidence of the design in this model, not confirmation that every ID. vehicle will use an identical layout.
What is not yet established
Volkswagen says future ID. models will have steering-wheel buttons, but its announcements do not specify a complete model-by-model rollout for the rest of the cockpit. Car and Driver reported on January 5, 2026, that Volkswagen had not identified all models receiving the new design and that the ID. Polo was not then sold in the United States; those are publication-date details, not a guarantee of current market availability. Car and Driver’s report provides that context. The announcements concern the ID. electric-vehicle family and should not be taken as a promise about every VW model or regional lineup.

What controls are physical in the new VW interiors?
The announced layouts give drivers dedicated controls for selected frequently used functions instead of requiring every operation to begin on a screen.

Does the new Volkswagen cockpit still have a touchscreen?
Yes. Physical controls supplement, rather than replace, the screens. The ID. Polo has an almost 13-inch infotainment touchscreen alongside its 10.25-inch digital cockpit. The ID.3 Neo retains a 12.9-inch touch display. Volkswagen’s announcements describe the physical controls and screens together as parts of the cockpit design.
Why is Volkswagen changing the layout?
Volkswagen says customer feedback informed the redesign and emphasizes clearer, more intuitive operation. In the ID. Polo announcement, Technical Development board member Kai Grünitz described an operating environment with physical buttons and newly structured screens. Chief designer Andreas Mindt said clear physical buttons provide “stability and trust.” Those are the company’s design rationale and executives’ views; the announcements do not provide independent tests showing the new controls are safer or objectively easier to use.

What “bringing buttons back” means—and what it does not
The practical change is a return to dedicated physical controls for climate, hazards, steering-wheel functions, and audio in the documented ID. interiors. It is not a wholesale rejection of touchscreens, and the confirmed examples do not establish that every Volkswagen model will receive the same treatment. The scope is currently clearest for the ID. Polo and ID.3 Neo.
