Volkswagen’s 2005 EcoRacer was a functional concept for a featherweight, mid-engine diesel sports car—not a production model. What was Volkswagen’s EcoRacer?

Was it really half the weight of a Miata?
No verified comparison in the cited coverage establishes that ratio. Motor1 characterizes the EcoRacer as lighter than the original Miata, and The Autopian reports its weight at about 1,875 pounds. Neither provides a like-for-like Miata figure and weight convention that would substantiate “nearly half.” Because Miata weight varies by generation and specification, a meaningful percentage would require naming the exact Miata model year and market and comparing consistent curb-weight figures.

Was the EcoRacer a production car?
No. Automotive coverage describes the EcoRacer as a concept or functional prototype, and it did not become a production model. The available sources do not provide a named Volkswagen statement explaining a specific cancellation decision, so it would be misleading to assign a definitive reason for why it stayed a concept.
EcoRacer and BlueSport are different Volkswagen concepts
The EcoRacer is sometimes easy to confuse with Volkswagen’s later BlueSport, but they are separate cars. The BlueSport was unveiled in 2009 as another mid-engine diesel roadster concept. The Autopian’s BlueSport history describes a 2.0-liter TDI; those details belong to BlueSport, not the EcoRacer.
