Yes. CARIAD named STMicroelectronics (ST) as its partner to co-develop a next-generation Volkswagen Group automotive system-on-chip (SoC). Announced on July 20, 2022, the planned chip was intended for CARIAD’s AU1 processor family and broad vehicle-electronics duties. The announcement did not name a chip model or launch date, and the official sources reviewed do not confirm that the AU1 chip entered production.
Who is CARIAD’s partner for its next-generation car SoC?
The partner is STMicroelectronics. In their July 20, 2022 joint announcement, CARIAD and ST said they planned to jointly develop an automotive SoC based on ST’s Stellar architecture. CARIAD was to contribute Volkswagen Group-specific requirements and functionalities.
The announcement also named TSMC as the intended wafer manufacturer for ST. That was part of the announced plan, not confirmation of a current supply arrangement. CARIAD described the approach as a direct relationship with semiconductor suppliers at Tier 2 and Tier 3 levels.
What was the chip supposed to do?
The planned SoC was intended to complement ST’s Stellar high-performance automotive microcontrollers (MCUs), extending power-efficient real-time capabilities into service-oriented vehicle systems. The companies identified applications across vehicle networking, drivetrain, energy management and comfort electronics, including zone controllers and servers running VW.OS.

CARIAD’s AU1 family was to combine the co-developed SoCs with standard Stellar MCUs. The companies described a common hardware and software basis across electronic control units (ECUs), with goals that included over-the-air feature extensions, fewer ECUs and lower development complexity. These were stated objectives; the announcement did not demonstrate results in a production vehicle.
Has the CARIAD–ST chip entered production?
The public account of AU1 in the official sources reviewed remains the 2022 plan. The joint announcement said detailed cooperation agreements were still to be finalized. It did not specify a named SoC model, production date or Volkswagen vehicle application. Later official material reviewed describes related ST Stellar products and separate Volkswagen chip programs, but does not establish that the AU1 SoC entered production or was fitted to a vehicle.
Do not confuse the planned AU1 SoC with individual Stellar MCU products. For example, ST lists its SR6G7C4 MCU as active and in volume production, but that catalog status is not evidence that the separately announced AU1 SoC was produced or deployed.

The CARIZON estimate and delivery projection apply only to that China-focused ADAS chip, not AU1. Likewise, the Qualcomm letter of intent is a separate program, not an update confirming the ST partnership’s chip.
