Volkswagen’s “new mini-camper” is the compact Caddy California with the PanAmericana package. Unveiled at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon on August 30, 2024, it arrived as part of a broader California van-life brand that includes vehicles, services, products and experiences—not as a new name for one campervan. The larger New California is a separate, Multivan-based model range.
What Volkswagen announced
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles introduced California as a wider van-life brand at the 2024 Düsseldorf Caravan Salon. The announcement presented three distinct vehicles: the Caddy California with a new PanAmericana package, the updated New California and the Grand California. The brand concept also included a club, mobility services, outdoor events, an app and lifestyle accessories.
That distinction matters: “California” refers both to Volkswagen’s campervan name and, in this announcement, to an ecosystem intended to serve campervan owners. Volkswagen said VW vans converted by other outfitters were also welcome. Lars Krause, the company’s board member responsible for Sales and Marketing, described the broader ambition: « Nous créons une nouvelle marque au sein de Volkswagen Véhicules Utilitaires, que nous avons appelée ‘California’, et qui va bien au-delà de nos célèbres vans aménagés. »
The mini-camper: Caddy California PanAmericana
The compact camper in the headline is the Caddy California. Volkswagen said the Caddy California with PanAmericana package would make its world debut at the Caravan Salon, extending the PanAmericana styling concept to the camper-equipped Caddy. The announcement characterized its equipment as robust and off-road oriented, but supplied no measured capability figures or independent off-road test results; the styling package alone should not be taken as proof of a specific level of off-road performance.

Volkswagen also said the Caddy could be optionally equipped with its established mini-kitchen, a camping table and chairs, and an interior blackout system. Those are described as optional equipment, not as standard features on every Caddy California.
How the New California differs
The New California is a separate, larger campervan based on the long-wheelbase Multivan. Volkswagen listed five launch versions: Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper, Coast and Ocean. The kitchen layout varies by version: Beach Camper has a compact mini-kitchen at the rear, while Coast and Ocean have a kitchen on the driver’s side.

Those five names do not mean every version is offered in every country. Volkswagen’s 2024 Sweden announcement listed Beach Camper and Ocean for that market; its France announcement listed Beach Camper, Coast and Ocean. Availability and powertrain combinations therefore need to be checked against the relevant national lineup.
The Sweden announcement gives the New California’s launch-era dimensions as 5,173 mm long and 1,941 mm wide excluding mirrors. It describes the vehicle as built on the MQB platform and based on the long-wheelbase Multivan. The broader lineup included TDI diesel, TSI petrol and eHybrid plug-in hybrid powertrain types, with 4MOTION all-wheel drive associated with the eHybrid. Exact outputs and combinations depended on the market.

Volkswagen said both-side sliding doors became standard across the New California range and that the model retained a pop-up roof. The Sweden announcement also describes removable individual rear seats and presents the two sliding doors as a way to open the living area to the outdoors on either side. These are launch-era manufacturer descriptions, not guarantees for later model years or independently tested findings.

For a compact camper and the option of PanAmericana styling, the Caddy is the relevant model. For the larger Multivan-based layout, compare the New California versions available in your country, paying particular attention to kitchen placement, seating and the specific powertrain configuration. The launch announcement does not establish current prices or current availability.

What the California brand included beyond vehicles
Volkswagen’s launch description extended beyond the vans themselves. It named a California Club, mobility services, outdoor events, a dedicated app, lifestyle accessories and California Profi, which it described as European technical assistance from specialists in campervan travel. Volkswagen also named blankets and backpacks among the lifestyle accessories; the announcement does not identify a particular backpack model or establish compatibility, manufacturer approval or a specific retail listing.
The company cited rental California campervans via roadsurfer, campsites or overnight stays connected with Hinterland and the Ritz-Carlton Wolfsburg, and surf activities including Surftown. It also referred to promotional offers for California Club members. These are launch-announcement references, not confirmation that the same offers remain available today or operate in every market.
