EVERY1 at around €20,000, planned for production in 2027. Separately, it is developing China-specific EVs and says it aims to match local rivals’ costs in compact entry-level models by 2026. These are plans and targets—not proof that the cars are already on sale or that the cost goals have been met.
Volkswagen’s affordable EV plans for Europe
The European program is Volkswagen’s Electric Urban Car Family: front-wheel-drive models based on the MEB platform. The two announced cars occupy different price and timing targets.
| Model | Announced price and timing | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ID.2all | €25,000 class; production launch targeted for 2026 | The cited €25,000-class plan appears on Volkswagen’s 2025 ID. EVERY1 page, while the ID.2all itself was presented as a concept in 2023. Volkswagen said the concept was not available for sale. Final production price, specifications and customer delivery timing are not established in the cited sources. Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 concept car; ID.2all concept announcement |
| ID. EVERY1 | Around €20,000 starting price; production planned for 2027 | The vehicle shown in Volkswagen’s March 2025 announcement is a concept, not a confirmation of a production car currently available to buy. The final price and specifications are not established. Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 concept car |
What the ID.2all concept’s range figures mean
Volkswagen’s 2023 concept announcement gave the ID.2all an estimated range of about 450 km under the WLTP test cycle and a concept charging estimate of about 20 minutes for a 10–80% charge. These are concept figures, not confirmed specifications for the production model. Volkswagen’s ID.2all announcement
China is a separate, locally tailored strategy
Volkswagen’s China push is not simply the European urban-car program exported to another market. In March 2024, the Group said it was developing local capabilities and products to compete in China’s entry-level compact segment, where it cited fast-moving local EV makers, price pressure and customer expectations for connected in-car technology. The Associated Press described that challenge in April 2024 and reported Volkswagen’s intent to develop vehicles locally rather than merely adapt European models. Associated Press, April 24, 2024

Cost and development-time targets
Volkswagen said it aims to reach cost parity with local competitors for entry-level compact vehicles by 2026. It also said the China Main Platform (CMP) targets a 40% cost reduction by that year, supported in part by a zonal electrical/electronic architecture developed with XPENG and competitive battery technology. Volkswagen has not established in the cited announcement that either target has been achieved. Volkswagen Group China cost and technology strategy
The company also said its Hefei-based Volkswagen Group China Technology Company (VCTC) could shorten time to market for China-specific products by 30%. That is Volkswagen’s stated target or claim, not an independently measured result in the cited source.

What Volkswagen announced for China in 2026
At Auto China in April 2026, the Group presented four China-focused world premieres: Volkswagen ID. UNYX 09 and ID. AURA T6, plus JETTA X and AUDI E7X. It also said it planned to launch 20 smart electric vehicles in China during 2026. The figure is a Group-wide launch plan, not a count of Volkswagen-brand affordable cars confirmed as sold or delivered. The announcement does not establish that all 20 vehicles had reached customers. Can Volkswagen match Chinese EV makers on price?
The announced European price classes show Volkswagen’s intended entry points, but the available figures do not support a like-for-like price verdict against named Chinese competitors. They are targets for future models, not verified retail prices, and the cited sources do not provide comparable production specifications or a current, market-specific competitor price test.
For China, Volkswagen’s cost-parity objective and CMP cost-reduction target describe how the company hopes to close the cost gap. They do not demonstrate that it has done so. Its local-development approach is aimed at reducing both cost and time to market, but the cited sources do not confirm the outcome of those targets.
