The ID. ERA 9X is a production, full-size SUV for Volkswagen’s China lineup, developed through SAIC-Volkswagen. It follows the ID. ERA concept shown in 2025, but the concept’s specifications should not be treated as specifications for the production 9X. Volkswagen described the production model as its first full-size range-extender SUV in an announcement dated April 8, 2026. Volkswagen’s announcement places the vehicle within its China product strategy.
Is the ID. ERA 9X a plug-in hybrid or a range extender?
Volkswagen describes the 9X as an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV, with a range-extender system. Calling it a PHEV is broadly understandable because it combines a rechargeable battery with an onboard combustion engine, but that label alone can obscure how the system is intended to work: the engine serves as a generator to supply electricity and extend driving range, rather than defining the vehicle as a conventional hybrid in which engine power is a primary means of propulsion.
Volkswagen identifies the engine as an EA211 range extender. A launch report credited to Pacific Auto and hosted by SAIC Motor specifies a 1.5T EA211 engine and a 65.2 kWh CATL battery. Those are reported production details, not results from independent testing. The SAIC-hosted launch report also gives additional equipment and dimension details.

How far can the ID. ERA 9X travel on electric power?
Volkswagen announced more than 400 km of pure-electric range and more than 1,600 km of total range. The launch report attributes a figure of more than 400 km of electric range to the CLTC test cycle. Treat these as manufacturer-announced and report-attributed figures, not independently verified real-world results; actual distance can vary with conditions and use.
CLTC figures should not be compared directly with range estimates measured under a different test cycle. The cited announcements do not provide independent road-test data or establish what range drivers should expect in everyday conditions.

What are the 9X’s size and cabin features?
Pacific Auto’s launch report lists the SUV at 5,207 mm long, 1,997 mm wide and 1,810 mm tall, with a 3,070 mm wheelbase. It describes a six-seat cabin, air suspension, rear-wheel steering and multiple screens. The report does not establish which features are standard across all versions, so buyers should check the current China-market configurator or dealer specification for trim-level equipment.
How much does the Volkswagen ID. ERA 9X cost in China?
The published figures refer to different pricing moments and terms; they should not be read as one current price list.

Can you buy the ID. ERA 9X outside China?
The cited announcements place the ID. ERA 9X in Volkswagen’s China lineup and associate it with SAIC-Volkswagen. What Volkswagen says the launch represents
Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer said in the April 8, 2026 China announcement that the company planned to launch more than 30 new-energy vehicles in China by 2029. The statement sets the 9X in the context of Volkswagen’s China product push; it is a company strategy commitment, not a specification or availability promise for the 9X outside China.
