Volkswagen do Brasil has named its upcoming pickup the Tukan, revealed Canary Yellow as a launch color, and confirmed planned production in Brazil starting in 2027. The announcement does not give a showroom date, price, or final specifications, so technical details circulating in automotive coverage remain expectations rather than confirmed features.
What Volkswagen has confirmed about the Tukan
- Name and color: Volkswagen do Brasil announced the Tukan name and Canary Yellow on February 3, 2026, at an event in Rio de Janeiro. The company described the yellow as one of the colors associated with the pickup’s arrival. Volkswagen’s announcement, reproduced by VW News Blog.
- Brazilian development: Volkswagen says the pickup was designed, planned, and developed in Brazil.
- Production: The company confirmed planned production at its São José dos Pinhais factory in Paraná beginning in 2027. That is a production target, not a stated retail launch date.
Volkswagen called the Tukan a project in a segment new to the brand. That wording does not establish that Volkswagen has never made any pickup, nor does it mean the truck is unprecedented worldwide.
When will the Volkswagen Tukan go on sale?
Volkswagen has not announced a specific Brazilian showroom date or when orders will open. Its statement says production is planned to begin in 2027; vehicles may reach dealers later, but the cited announcement does not establish when. It also provides no price or final specification sheet.
What the teaser does—and does not—reveal
The initial announcement disclosed a sketch and selected visual details, not a complete technical specification. AutoPapo reported expectations that the Tukan could be larger than the Fiat Strada but smaller than the Fiat Toro, and might come in single- and double-cab versions. The publication also reported expectations of a rigid rear axle with parabolic springs and a 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid system. These are reported possibilities, not Volkswagen-confirmed configurations or equipment. AutoPapo’s report said Volkswagen had not released technical information at the time.

Why Volkswagen is developing the pickup in Brazil
Volkswagen presents the Tukan as part of a broader South American product push. The company says its regional plan includes 21 launches by 2028 and R$20 billion in investment. These are Volkswagen’s announced plans, not completed launches or independently assessed investment outcomes. Volkswagen’s announcement also tied the Rio event to the start of its sponsorship of Brazil’s men’s and women’s national football teams.

CEO and president Ciro Possobom described the project as a strategic turning point for the brand in Brazil, emphasizing local engineering and the country’s role in developing vehicles for regional relevance. In a report relaying a Reuters interview, Possobom estimated that pickups represent almost 18% of Brazilian sales; that figure is his attributed estimate, not an independently sourced market statistic. The details that would make a meaningful product or rival comparison possible are still unannounced: official dimensions, payload, engine and hybrid specifications, cab and trim availability, price, and order timing. Until Volkswagen publishes those details, treat the sketch and reported configuration clues as preliminary rather than as a buying specification.
