The Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo is the version that puts a fixed partition between the cab and the load area. Volkswagen’s own term for the “split wall” is a fixed partition, and in its regional equipment material the partition can be ordered with a window and a load-through hatch. The hatch extends the usable loading length, and removing the partition is permitted in the panel van under certain conditions. Figures for cargo volume, payload and tie-down strength depend on the market, the model year and the specific publication, so each one needs to be read with its source in mind.
What “split-wall” means in Volkswagen’s terms
Readers searching for a “split-wall” ID. Buzz are usually looking for the cargo-and-passenger arrangement: people in the front, goods behind them, and a barrier in between. Volkswagen does not use “split-wall” as a product name. Its material refers to a fixed partition or partition wall. Treat the phrase as a description, not a trim level, option code or aftermarket kit.
The directly documented configuration is the ID. Buzz Cargo. It has seats in the cab, a fixed partition behind them, and a separate load compartment. Volkswagen’s international media-drive material describes three cab seats as standard in the configuration it covered: the driver’s seat and a double passenger bench. An individual front passenger seat is offered as an alternative. Nothing in the sources establishes that every passenger ID. Buzz carries this partition, so check the specification of the exact vehicle before assuming it.
How the partition is configured
The partition sits directly behind the seats and separates the load area from the cab. Volkswagen describes it as optionally available with a window, a loading opening, or both. The window lets the driver and passenger see into the load area, and the opening lets longer items reach forward toward the seats.

The window
The window is a visibility feature. Volkswagen’s regional equipment material presents it as part of the same optional partition package as the loading hatch, so ordering and availability should be confirmed with the dealer for the specific market.
The load-through hatch
The hatch is the feature that matters most for long loads. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Malta equipment page states that a partition with a window and loading hatch increases the maximum loading length by 45 cm. The page is undated; its content was uploaded before 28 June 2025, so the figure should be treated as the Maltese regional page’s figure rather than a universal specification.

Volkswagen Australia’s MY25 ID. Buzz Cargo brochure describes the hatch as a floor-height opening on the front passenger side, intended for long objects. The brochure is specific to Australia’s model-year 25 specification. A reader in another market should check whether the same hatch and dimensions are offered there.
Cargo figures and how to read them
Several numbers circulate for the ID. Buzz Cargo, and they come from different documents. The table below separates them so each figure stays attached to its source. Where a source does not state a value, the table says so.

The practical rule is simple: quote a number only with its market, model year and publication. A cargo volume taken from one document and a payload taken from another do not describe the same vehicle unless the documents match.
Securing a load
Volkswagen identifies optional lashing rails in the load compartment, and its equipment page says these can be used with ratchet straps. The converter guidance says factory lashing rails and fastening rings should be used as the owner’s manual directs. The rails are a tie-down system, not a guarantee that any strap or anchor will hold any load.

- Open the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle and find the section on load securing. Note which anchor points are factory lashing rails and which are fastening rings.
- Check the rating for the rail system on the specific vehicle. The Australian MY25 brochure gives 150 kg for the side trims and partition rails in its described configuration; other markets and model years may state different values or none.
- Use general cargo ratchet straps that are compatible with the rail profile, and read the strap’s own working-load rating. Do not assume a strap’s rating applies to the vehicle’s anchor points.
- Keep the load within the lower of the vehicle payload and the anchor rating, and distribute weight so the rear axle is not overloaded.
Volkswagen’s documents do not establish that a particular third-party strap is approved for the ID. Buzz or fits every cargo configuration, so the strap’s packaging and the owner’s manual are the authorities to follow.

The partition is not a structural member. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ converter guidelines, May 2026 edition, section 3.1.7, state: “Partitions have no function with respect to body stiffness.” On that basis, the guidelines say partition walls can be removed wholly or partly in the panel van, unless accident-prevention or country-specific rules prohibit it. Any sharp edges left by removal must be covered.

The same guidelines warn that modifications made away from original production condition can lead to withdrawal of type approval. They also say that country-specific laws, directives and approval requirements must be observed. That is the boundary of what the source establishes.
What the guidance does not settle
- It does not establish that partition removal is legal or advisable in every registration jurisdiction.
- It applies to the panel van; it is not established that the same rule applies unchanged to passenger-car versions.
- It does not address insurance treatment or the approval needs of a particular converter’s work.
Before any removal or change, confirm the model, body type and registration country, then speak with a qualified converter or the relevant vehicle-approval authority. The guidelines are a manufacturer statement of the principles, not a permission to modify.
The guidelines are hosted as a third-party copy; Volkswagen is identified as the publisher. Readers should check the current edition through Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles or their national dealer network.
Checklist before buying or converting
- Confirm the body type: Cargo panel van or a passenger version.
- Confirm whether the partition is fitted, and whether it includes a window, a loading hatch or both.
- Check the loading length and cargo volume for the exact market and model year.
- Read the payload figure for the vehicle, not a figure from a different publication.
- Locate the lashing rails and confirm the rating printed in the owner’s manual.
- Before removing a partition, check local approval, insurance and conversion rules.
Volkswagen’s sources support the core facts: the partition exists as an option, the hatch adds loading length in the regional specification described, and removal is permitted in principle under conditions. Everything beyond that depends on the market in which the vehicle is registered.
