Some Volkswagen ID.3 Pro and Pro S cars can be upgraded after purchase from 150 kW (203 PS) to 170 kW (231 PS). It is a paid software function, not a hardware change. Auto Express reported UK prices on 14 August 2025 of £16.50 a month after a one-month free trial, or £649 once. Those were the reported figures on that date. Volkswagen UK’s ID.3 pages describe post-purchase upgrades in general terms but do not state a current price for this one, so check the figure in the car before you commit.
What the upgrade changes
Volkswagen’s 2024 ID.3 Pro material describes the upgrade as a digital increase in output, raising the car from 150 kW (203 PS) to 170 kW (231 PS). The increase is 20 kW, or 28 PS on Volkswagen’s figures. Auto Express described the same change as 27 bhp in its 2025 report.

The 59 kWh battery and 434 km figure belong to the model description in Volkswagen’s 2024 release. Do not carry them over to other ID.3 versions or trims. The 6.6-second acceleration figure is a manufacturer figure for the described configuration, not a result from an independent test.
Reported UK prices (August 2025)
Auto Express reported two ways to pay for the upgrade in the UK. Both figures date from its 14 August 2025 article.

Monthly payment
Paying monthly keeps the upfront cost near zero. Because the terms are described only in the 2025 report, confirm whether the monthly arrangement continues for the life of the car and what happens if you sell or end it.
One-time payment
The £649 option is the one the report says transfers with the car on resale. Simple arithmetic on the reported prices shows the break-even point. £649 divided by £16.50 is about 39.3 monthly payments. Counting the free first month, the monthly route costs about the same as the one-time payment after roughly 40 months of ownership. This comparison assumes the reported prices still apply, which the official UK material does not confirm.

Why Volkswagen sells power this way
A Volkswagen spokesperson, quoted by Auto Express, framed the upgrade as an alternative to ordering a higher-output model at the start:
“Offering more power to customers is nothing new – historically many petrol and diesel vehicles have been offered with engines of the same size, but with the possibility of choosing one with more potency. These traditionally are higher up in the product range, with more specification and a higher list price.”

The spokesperson added: “If customers wish to have an even sportier driving experience, they now have an option to do so, within the life of the vehicle, rather than committing from the outset with a higher initial purchase price.”
Which ID.3 cars can be upgraded
Volkswagen’s 2024 material ties the upgrade to the Pro and Pro S versions. Eligibility is not the same everywhere. Volkswagen’s Pro S launch material says that in Germany the Pro S came with 170 kW as standard, while customers in other markets could raise output from 150 kW to 170 kW after purchase. A German-specification Pro S is therefore not the same case as a UK car that needs the upgrade.

Volkswagen’s 2026 ID.3 Neo equipment announcement replaces the Pure, Pro and Pro S names with Trend, Life and Style. Older Pro and Pro S listings and newer trims may not map neatly onto each other. Use the model year and trim printed on the car’s paperwork. The same announcement lists steering-wheel heating as an on-demand function on Neo Trend, which shows that paid unlocks appear on newer trims too.

- You plan to sell within two to three years: the monthly option probably costs less overall, but check the monthly terms carefully, because the one-time option is the one described as transferring to the next owner.
- You plan to keep the car for four years or more: the one-time payment reaches cost parity with the monthly option at about 40 months on the reported figures, so it is worth comparing against the real price shown in the car.
- You want the 170 kW output from the start: compare the upgrade with buying a trim that already includes it. Volkswagen’s own argument is that upgrading later avoids a higher initial price.
- Your car is a used ID.3: eligibility depends on trim, model year and market. Only the car’s own in-car shop can confirm whether the upgrade is offered.
Steps before you buy
- Confirm the model year and trim from the car’s paperwork, and note whether it is labelled Pure, Pro or Pro S, or Trend, Life or Style.
- Open the in-car shop on the car and check whether the power upgrade appears, and what price it shows for that specific vehicle.
- Ask the seller for written terms covering monthly payments, what happens on sale, and whether the one-time payment transfers.
- Work out how long you expect to keep the car and compare it with the 40-month break-even above, using the price on screen rather than the 2025 figure.
Home charging is a separate purchase
Volkswagen UK’s ID.3 page lists an Ohme home-charger offer for qualifying new ID.3 orders. The charger affects how and where you charge. It does not change the car’s output, so it should not be treated as part of the power upgrade.
