Compare the car’s actual configuration, equipment, safety evidence, recall status and condition rather than choosing by model year or listing description alone.
Is the Volkswagen Arteon a hatchback or a sedan?
The Arteon is a four-door car with a rear hatch. IIHS classifies the 2023 model as a large four-door hatchback. That body style can look like a sedan, so check the vehicle itself and its specifications if cargo access or body style matters to you.
What changed on the 2022 Arteon?
Volkswagen’s U.S. model-year announcement describes a substantial powertrain change for 2022. The 2.0-liter TSI engine was rated at 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, compared with 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft for the prior configuration. The transmission changed from an eight-speed automatic to a seven-speed DSG with Tiptronic. These are manufacturer-reported specifications; verify the specific car’s trim and configuration using its window sticker, VIN/build information or owner materials. 2022 trim and cabin details
Volkswagen said R-Line appearance became standard on the 2022 SE, and described 18-inch R-Line wheels and paddle shifters among the updates. The announcement also says the 2021 interior redesign carried forward, with Digital Cockpit and an 8-inch Discover Media display standard, and wireless charging standard across the 2022 lineup. Treat these as U.S.-market, model-year-specific claims—not assumptions about every Arteon or every market. Confirm installed equipment on the individual vehicle.

What year Volkswagen Arteon should you buy?
There is no substantiated year-by-year reliability or ownership-cost ranking here. A practical starting point is to decide whether you want the 2022-and-later powertrain described by Volkswagen, then compare individual cars on evidence and condition. A newer year alone does not establish that a particular vehicle is the better buy.
- Powertrain: Compare the documented 2022 update with the earlier configuration, and verify the candidate’s actual engine and transmission.
- Trim and equipment: Check the window sticker or vehicle documentation; do not infer features from badges, wheels or an online listing title.
- Safety evidence: Read ratings by test and check which model years they apply to.
- Recall status: Look up the VIN and establish whether any applicable campaign remains open.
- Condition and records: Compare service documentation and inspection results, including tires, brakes and the operation of the car’s equipment.
How safe is the Arteon?
IIHS’s page for the 2023 Arteon displays a Top Safety Pick+ designation. Its listed results include Good ratings for the small-overlap driver- and passenger-side tests, the original moderate-overlap front test, roof strength, head restraints and seats, and headlights. Front crash prevention results vary by scenario: Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle, Advanced for daytime pedestrian and Basic for nighttime pedestrian. The structural crash ratings shown apply to 2019–2023 models; IIHS notes that Volkswagen conducted some tests. Does the 2023 Arteon have any recalls?
NHTSA’s Part 573 report submitted February 12, 2025, lists recall 25V-082, with 1,660 potentially involved 2023 Arteons produced from January 16 through December 22, 2023. The report says the affected production population was identified through control units with certain software that might lead to malfunctions. This does not mean every 2023 Arteon is affected, and the report alone does not establish the current status of an individual car. Check a candidate’s VIN
- Find the vehicle’s 17-digit VIN and enter it in Volkswagen’s recalls and service-campaign lookup.
- Review the vehicle’s records through NHTSA as well as Volkswagen’s lookup.
- If a campaign applies, ask the seller or dealer whether the remedy has been completed and request documentation. Volkswagen recommends completing an applicable safety recall without delay.
What to inspect before buying
Review the service records and have the car inspected independently when appropriate. These checks are practical prompts, not evidence that a particular item is a known Arteon defect.

- Look for uneven tire wear and assess tire and brake condition.
- Check for warning lights and confirm driver-assistance features operate as expected.
- Test the infotainment system and connectivity features.
- Open and close the hatch; inspect its seals and the surrounding interior for condition.
- Compare the seller’s equipment claims with the car’s documentation and test the features you care about.
Volkswagen’s owner resources and tutorials include a route to owner’s manuals by model year. If you want a printed manual, match it to the car’s model year and market; it can help explain controls, but it does not replace an inspection.
