Volkswagen and NXP demonstrated Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology in a Volkswagen concept car in 2019, showing how precise ranging could help a vehicle distinguish a nearby key from one whose signal has been relayed. The announcement was about a concept-car demonstration—not proof that Volkswagen had launched the world’s first production car with UWB. Volkswagen Netherlands now says the new Golf has factory-fitted UWB, but availability for a specific car depends on its market, model year and trim.
What Volkswagen and NXP showed in 2019
In an announcement dated August 27, 2019, NXP Semiconductors said it and Volkswagen had demonstrated UWB capabilities in a Volkswagen concept car. The announcement described theft protection alongside gesture recognition, child-seat positioning and automated trailer-hitch activation as demonstrated or prospective applications. Parking, access and payment were presented as future possibilities, not as confirmed production features. NXP’s announcement characterized UWB localization as accurate to “a few centimeters in real time.” That is NXP’s 2019 description of the technology, not an independent measurement of the concept car or a guarantee for every vehicle.
Maik Rohde, then Volkswagen’s head of body electronics and car access systems, said in 2019: “The first UWB application we see is in theft protection – another security milestone which you will see in volume Volkswagen car models starting this year.” That statement records Volkswagen’s expectation at the time; it should not be read as current availability guidance. NXP chief technology officer Lars Reger said, “We see enormous potential in UWB.” Both comments appeared in NXP’s 2019 announcement.
NXP’s announcement also described an automotive UWB integrated circuit and noted that BMW Group, Continental and others were working on implementations through the Car Connectivity Consortium and IEEE. That points to wider development activity; it does not establish that any particular brand used a specific implementation. NXP’s historical automotive-chip announcement provides that context.

How UWB is intended to foil a relay attack
A relay attack tries to extend communication between a passive key and a car. If the vehicle is fooled into treating a distant key as nearby, it may allow keyless entry or starting. UWB is designed to make that tactic harder by measuring how long a radio signal takes to travel between the vehicle and key, then using that time-of-flight measurement to estimate distance and location.
NXP says its time-of-flight calculations are resistant to relay attacks based on signal amplification, and its current UWB technology overview describes centimeter-level ranging. Volkswagen’s consumer guidance puts the purpose plainly: checking whether the key is genuinely close to the car. This is a defense aimed at a particular way of extending or amplifying a key signal; it is not evidence that UWB prevents every kind of vehicle theft or attack. The cited sources do not give an independent attack-success rate or head-to-head vehicle-security test.

UWB, Bluetooth and NFC can play different roles
Digital-key systems may use multiple radios for separate tasks rather than relying on one technology for everything. NXP’s Digital Key Reference System describes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for pre-ranging and wake-up, UWB for secure precise ranging and localization, and NFC for pairing and access support. The reference design states support for CCC Digital Key Release 4.0 and regional variants. It is an example architecture, not proof that the Volkswagen concept car—or every production vehicle—uses the same arrangement.
For a buyer comparing access options, the useful questions are whether entry is passive or requires a deliberate action, which radios handle wake-up and proximity measurement, what phone and vehicle combinations are compatible, and whether availability varies by country, model year or trim. Credential storage and sharing also matter. The cited material explains technology roles but does not provide a consumer head-to-head comparison of security, convenience or resistance to attacks.

What Volkswagen currently says about UWB and Mobile Key
Volkswagen Netherlands’ owner guidance says the new Golf is factory-equipped with UWB, which checks whether the key is actually near the vehicle. This is market-specific guidance and does not establish that every Golf, trim or model year—or a Golf sold elsewhere—has the feature. Check the local specification for the exact car rather than relying on the model name alone. Volkswagen Netherlands’ theft-prevention guidance describes its current consumer-facing position.
Mobile Key is a separate, deliberate-use feature
The same Volkswagen guidance describes Mobile Key as NFC-based: the driver presents an Android smartphone to the door handle to unlock the car, then places it in the cabin’s Phone Box to start. Volkswagen says the feature is currently available for Android smartphones. Unlike passive keyless access, this described process requires the driver to deliberately present and place the phone.

Parking location is not live vehicle tracking
Volkswagen says VW Connect records the car’s last parking location when the ignition is switched off. It says this is not a vehicle-tracking service and cannot reliably follow a car being moved on a transporter. Use requires a Volkswagen ID and a separate contract, according to the same guidance. A last-parked location should therefore not be mistaken for live stolen-vehicle tracking.

Vehicle-integrated UWB is not the same as a signal-blocking pouch for a conventional passive key. A pouch may be considered separately by owners concerned about signal-extension attacks, but the cited sources do not test any particular product or establish its shielding performance or compatibility. Check that it fits the key and verify the maker’s claims; it is not a UWB retrofit.
