For 1989, Chevrolet’s order guide identifies “Baja Pickup” as RPO 5Z7 within a preferred equipment package. Decals, a roll bar, or off-road accessories may be clues, but they cannot establish factory identity on their own.
What “Baja” meant on the S-10
For 1989, Chevrolet listed Baja as a preferred equipment package, not simply as a separate conventional trim series. The factory order guide calls the vehicle a “S10 BAJA PICKUP (REGULAR CAB)” and identifies Baja Pickup with RPO 5Z7. That distinction matters when inspecting a used truck: a Baja badge or Baja-style equipment does not prove the package was installed at the factory.

The guide organizes the package into preferred equipment groups, with shared core equipment and some group-specific features or selectable configurations. It also says the engine, transmission, axle, and emissions equipment must be entered as additions to the package. A Baja identification therefore does not, by itself, specify those mechanical choices.

GM’s 1989 S-10 order guide lists the following equipment across Baja preferred equipment groups 1, 2, and 3. Codes below are reproduced as printed in the factory guide; the codes and package contents are model-year-specific.

The 1989 table prints ZM6 for both the shield package and suspension package. An enthusiast overview assigns ZM5 to underbody shields and ZM6 to off-road suspension, but that is not how the cited 1989 factory table is printed. Do not silently substitute the secondary source’s code: use the order guide and the truck’s own label for the relevant model year.

How to verify a particular truck
- Establish the model year and configuration. Record the model year, cab, drivetrain, and bed/body configuration from the truck and its title or registration. Eligibility and package details should be checked against that year’s factory information.
- Find and document the SPID label. Photograph the surviving Service Parts Identification label and transcribe its RPO codes. Chevrolet’s 2002 S-10 restoration kit says the RPO list is printed on this label. Its location can vary by year and body, so consult the applicable service literature if it is not readily visible.
- Compare the codes with the matching year’s factory guide. For a 1989 truck, look for Baja Pickup (5Z7) and compare the rest of the label with the package and group information in the 1989 S-10 information kit. Do not assume the 1989 list applies to another model year.
- Inspect the physical equipment as supporting evidence. Note which package-related parts remain, and whether items appear missing, replaced, or later-added. The surviving equipment can help assess condition and consistency; it is not a substitute for factory records.
- Seek vehicle-specific documentation when provenance matters. The GM Heritage Archive describes holdings that include build documentation, dealer invoices and/or build sheets and explains how to request documentation.
What appearance can—and cannot—tell you
An enthusiast overview describes visible Baja-associated details such as a roll bar with off-road lights, tubular front grille guard and fog lights, tubular rear bumper, shields, windshield banner, Baja box-side decals, and body striping. It also mentions options including Outlaw aluminum wheels, a net endgate, and a box-mounted spare carrier. These descriptions can guide an inspection, but they are secondary-source context rather than confirmation that every item was factory equipment on every truck.
Parts and graphics can be added, removed, or replaced during a truck’s life. A well-equipped S-10 with Baja decals may not have been ordered as a Baja; an original Baja may also have lost some of its equipment. Treat visible details as clues to compare with the correct factory guide and vehicle documentation.

Model-year limits and drivetrain questions
GM Heritage Archive catalogs S-10 information kits for 1989, 1990, and 1991. The detailed Baja package information described here is from the searchable 1989 factory guide; it should not be generalized to every year. An enthusiast overview reports Baja availability from 1988 through 1991 and says 1991 trucks had Baja-embroidered seat backs and distinctive door-panel trim. Those year-range and 1991-specific details are secondary claims and should be checked against the relevant year’s factory guide or an individual truck’s records.
The 1989 guide excerpt identifies a regular-cab Baja pickup but does not settle whether every Baja across all model years, cab and body configurations was four-wheel drive. Do not use this excerpt alone to answer a drivetrain question for a particular truck; check the applicable year’s ordering information and vehicle records.

Comparing a claimed Baja with a standard S-10
- Factory package evidence: Does the SPID/RPO list and any available documentation support the Baja package for that model year?
- Configuration: Was the truck’s cab, bed, and drivetrain combination offered with the package according to that year’s order guide?
- Equipment group: Which items were shared package content, and which were specific to a higher group or selectable?
- Originality and condition: Which expected components survive, and are any parts evidently replacements or later additions?
These checks distinguish evidence of factory ordering from the truck’s present-day appearance. The cited factory materials do not establish production totals, rarity rankings, or market value, so those should not be inferred from the Baja name alone.
