Virtual HIL helps automotive teams test software earlier by simulating some or all of the electronic control unit (ECU) and its environment. The term is used in different ways, so the key distinction is what is real and what is simulated: conventional hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) runs a physical controller against a real-time simulated vehicle or plant, while virtual ECU prototypes can represent controller hardware before it is available. Both are part of a broader validation strategy—not substitutes for every physical test.
What is hardware-in-the-loop testing?
Hardware-in-the-loop testing closes a feedback loop between a real ECU or controller and a computer simulation. The ECU reads simulated sensor signals and other inputs, processes them, and sends control outputs back to the simulated system. The simulation updates the modeled plant—such as a vehicle subsystem—and generates the next set of inputs.

For example, an HIL setup might connect a real powertrain controller to a real-time model of an engine and vehicle. The controller runs its production-intended software and responds to simulated operating conditions without needing the complete physical vehicle. NI’s HIL explainer describes the approach and its role in testing embedded control systems.

Teams can move testing earlier by changing what is represented by a model, what is software, and what is physical hardware. Model-in-the-loop (MiL), software-in-the-loop (SiL), virtual ECU prototyping, and conventional HIL are complementary approaches. They are not a mandatory sequence, and not every test transfers unchanged between stages.

| Stage | What is under test | What is simulated | What it helps establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| MiL | Control logic or a control model | The plant, stimuli, and other system behavior | Whether model-level control logic behaves as intended in modeled conditions. |
| SiL | Software code | The plant and its interaction with the software | How code behaves against modeled conditions before a physical controller is required. |
| Virtual ECU or hardware prototyping | Software running against a modeled digital ECU or MCU | Controller hardware behavior, and often other system elements | Earlier software execution, before the physical ECU is ready. |
| Conventional HIL | A physical ECU or controller | The plant and surrounding system, running in real time | How real controller hardware and software respond through actual signal and bus interfaces. |
| Physical testing | Real components or a complete system | Only elements that remain simulated | Evidence that depends on real hardware or an environment that cannot be represented adequately in simulation. |
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s reference on automotive software foundations emphasizes that simulation results depend on model fidelity. A successful result at one stage therefore does not automatically prove behavior in a different configuration or in the physical vehicle.
What makes an HIL system work?
An HIL bench is more than a simulator. NI’s HIL architecture guide identifies the main components:

- Material: This SRS simulator tester features an insulated, waterproof housing that protects internal components and resists cracking and deformation. The internal metal components offer excellent conductivity, ensuring stable signal transmission and resistance to rust.
- Fault Detection: This repair tool can detect and troubleshoot issues related to fault codes in the SRS system, providing instant feedback. When an anomaly is detected, the device emits a rapid alarm, allowing you to pinpoint the fault without disassembling the assembly.
- Easy Installation: This automotive SRS simulator tester requires no wiring. It features a plug-and-play design, simply disconnect the power source, locate the connector, and plug it in. It remains securely connected even on bumpy roads.
- Wide Applicability: This SRS diagnostic tool is suitable for sedans, SUVs, off-road vehicles, pickup trucks, and most other vehicle models. It can simulate functions such as side curtains or seat belts, ensuring that other components deploy normally in the event of a collision.
- Portable Design: This diagnostic simulator is lightweight and compact, fitting easily into a vehicle's toolbox or glove compartment. Once installed, connections remain secure and free from signal interference, ensuring that surrounding components continue to function normally.
- Device under test (DUT): the physical ECU or controller being evaluated.
- I/O and bus interfaces: the electrical signal paths and communication links between the DUT and the HIL system.
- Real-time compute: hardware that executes the simulated plant and system behavior within the timing limits expected by the controller.
- Application and test software: tools to configure the system, run tests, monitor results, and automate execution.
- Simulation models: representations of the vehicle, subsystem, sensors, actuators, and surroundings that are not physically present.
The model supplies the signals the DUT would receive from the real system. The I/O and bus paths carry those signals to the controller and return its outputs to the model. The loop must run predictably: delays, jitter, or poor synchronization can change the behavior being tested. NI’s architecture guide says the models and simulation software must run deterministically on a real-time platform so the system can exchange inputs and outputs within expected timing constraints.
Why timing and model fidelity matter
Real-time execution is central to conventional HIL because the ECU expects signals to arrive and change on a particular schedule. A result can be misleading if the simulation is late, inconsistent, or unsynchronized with the controller’s I/O. Low latency, minimal jitter, and accurate synchronization are therefore design requirements, not just performance conveniences.

- Material: The car SRS diagnosis tester is made of a plastic casing and gold-plated brass plugs. The metal plugs have excellent electrical conductivity and a fast response speed, while the plastic casing is hard, corrosion-resistant, making it less likely to crack or deform, ensuring long-term use
- Package content: Our automotive resistance simulator is available in 4-piece and 8-piece specifications, which are sufficient to meet the vehicle inspection needs. Moreover, the car bypass resistor is small, lightweight and easy to store, helping you deal with sudden vehicle malfunctions at any time
Model fidelity sets a different limit: a simulation can only support conclusions about the behavior it represents well enough. A model that omits a relevant physical effect, component interaction, or operating condition cannot establish how the real vehicle will behave in that respect. Simulation is valuable for repeatable, controlled testing, but physical tests such as dynamometer or road testing remain necessary where real-world evidence is required.
What to consider when designing a virtual HIL setup
Start with the controller and the question the test needs to answer. A setup intended to validate a particular ECU’s signal handling has different needs from one focused on system-level control behavior. Evaluate the following areas before selecting or integrating a platform:

How virtual ECU prototyping differs from conventional HIL
“Virtual HIL” does not have one universal meaning across vendors. In conventional HIL, the controller is physical and the environment is simulated. In virtual ECU or MCU prototyping, a model of the digital controller hardware lets software run before the physical ECU is ready. Synopsys describes this approach as virtual hardware “in-the-loop” and positions it as a way to start software testing earlier; it is distinct from connecting a real ECU to an HIL bench.

Virtual controller models can make early software work available to more teams, but they do not establish every property of the eventual ECU. Hardware-specific behavior and system interactions still need validation on physical targets and, where appropriate, a conventional HIL bench. Synopsys discusses this earlier-stage approach in its virtual hardware white paper.
What ISO/DPAS 34506 covers
As listed by ISO in September 2026, ISO/DPAS 34506, Edition 1, was in the approval-phase draft stage. It provides guidance for qualifying virtual test environments used to evaluate automated driving systems. Its stated scope includes open- and closed-loop environments, names MiL and SiL, and says the guidance may extend to HIL and vehicle-in-the-loop (ViL). It excludes validation of individual simulation models and assessment of the automated driving systems themselves. Because it was listed as a draft, its status and final scope may change; see the ISO listing.
