What happened in the Dubai hoverbike crash?
New Atlas’s June 9, 2020 account describes the Hoversurf Scorpion climbing rapidly at a secluded test area to approximately 30 meters (100 feet). The article’s description of the video says the craft then pitched back and forth and descended, struck the ground on its rear propellers, and flipped backward over the rider while its front propellers continued spinning. The reported height is approximate, not an independently verified measurement. New Atlas and The Drive both described a rapid descent, impact, and flip.
New Atlas reported that the pilot escaped injury and the hoverbike was totaled. The Drive also quoted Hoversurf saying the pilot was not injured. These are the reports’ accounts of the outcome, not findings from a published independent accident investigation.
What caused the Hoversurf Scorpion to crash?
Hoversurf said a barometer failed. New Atlas reproduced the company’s statement from the video description: “The barometer in Dubai refused and an accident occurred – a down from a height of 30 meters. All safety systems worked well, and the pilot was not injured. Safety is our main concern. It is thanks to such incidents that our designs are becoming more safe.” The Drive characterized Hoversurf’s explanation as mechanical failure.

The barometer explanation is the manufacturer’s account; the available reports do not independently confirm the component failure or establish a definitive root cause. The claim that the safety systems worked also comes from Hoversurf, rather than a separate investigation.
How high was the flight, and how does that compare with the reported operating limit?
New Atlas reported an approximate height of 30 meters (100 feet). The Drive said Hoversurf’s website listed a maximum safe operating altitude of 16 feet at the time of its June 2020 report. On those reported figures, the crash flight was far above that stated limit. The 16-foot figure is a historical value reported secondhand from the manufacturer’s website; these sources do not establish that it is a current specification or independently validate either figure.

Which hoverbike was involved?
Coverage identifies the vehicle as a Hoversurf Scorpion, also called the S3 or Scorpion-3 in different reports. “Hoversurf Scorpion” is the least ambiguous name. It is described as a manned, four-rotor hoverbike.
In 2018, Khaleej Times reported that Dubai Police officers were training on the Scorpion-3 and that the vehicle was expected to enter service by 2020. That report documents a plan at the time, not proof that the hoverbike later entered operational service. Khaleej Times quoted Brigadier Khalid Al Razzouqi, then Director of the Directorate General of Artificial Intelligence at Dubai Police, describing the bike as a way to enhance rapid-response capabilities.
