His potential influence over JLR is indirect: through Tata’s ownership and governance structure, not a documented role in running the carmaker.
How JLR fits into the Tata group
Tata Sons describes itself as the group’s principal investment holding company and promoter. It also says Tata companies operate independently under their own boards. JLR describes itself as part of Tata Motors; a November 2025 JLR announcement identifies it as a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, part of Tata Sons. Together, these sources establish an ownership chain from Tata Sons through Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles to JLR, not a direct management role for every Tata Sons director.
The distinction is between group-level influence—potentially exercised through ownership, board relationships and governance—and formal authority at JLR. The ownership chain makes the former a possible channel; it does not establish that Srinivasan personally directs JLR decisions.
What roles does Srinivasan hold?
Tata Sons
Tata Sons’ FY2024–25 annual-report notice identifies Srinivasan as a non-executive director. That is a Tata Sons board role, not an appointment to JLR. The cited notice covers FY2024–25 and does not establish his precise current tenure.

Sir Dorabji Tata Trust
On 11 November 2025, Tata Trusts announced that Srinivasan would become a trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust for three years, effective 12 November 2025, and be designated vice-chairman. This is a significant Tata Trusts governance position, but it is not a JLR board or executive appointment.
Who is formally responsible for JLR?
JLR’s public leadership listing names Natarajan Chandrasekaran as chairman and non-executive director, and PB Balaji as CEO. Srinivasan does not appear in the JLR PLC board roster displayed on that page. This supports the conclusion that the public listing does not document a direct JLR board or executive role for him; it cannot rule out informal contact or influence.

The appointment of Balaji illustrates JLR’s formal leadership channel. In an announcement dated 4 August 2025, Tata Group said Balaji would become JLR CEO from November 2025 and reported that the JLR board had searched for a candidate before deciding to appoint him. Chandrasekaran commented on the appointment. The announcement does not attribute the selection to Srinivasan.

Srinivasan’s Tata Sons and Tata Trusts positions place him within the wider Tata governance landscape. Because JLR sits within Tata’s corporate ownership chain, group-level governance is relevant context. But the available role descriptions do not show that Srinivasan has formal authority over JLR’s board, executive team or day-to-day operations. Any stronger claim about his personal influence over a specific JLR decision would need direct evidence.

That distinction matters when interpreting headlines about a powerful Tata figure having a “big say”: a position at a parent or trust level is not the same as a direct JLR appointment or proof of control over a particular business decision.
