The Swedish urban bike made with recycled coffee pods was the Vélosophy RE:CYCLE, a limited-edition collaboration with Nespresso launched in 2019. Its frame used recycled aluminium from Nespresso capsules—not the whole bicycle—and the companies announced a run of 1,000 bikes.
What was the bike called?
RE:CYCLE was created by Swedish bicycle and lifestyle brand Vélosophy with Nespresso. Nestlé’s August 12, 2019 launch announcement said the limited edition would be sold through Vélosophy’s ecommerce platform. Nestlé’s launch report and Nespresso Sweden’s announcement document the collaboration.
Was it really made out of coffee pods?
More precisely, the bicycle used recycled aluminium recovered from Nespresso coffee capsules, with the frame identified as the central use of that material. The sources do not say that every part of the bike was made from capsules, so “made entirely from coffee pods” would overstate the claim.
Nestlé reported that the 1,000-bike production run used more than 300,000 recycled Nespresso Arpeggio capsules. That is the company’s figure for the 2019 launch, not an independently measured lifecycle assessment or a measure of emissions saved.

What did RE:CYCLE look like?
Documented design details included a capsule-shaped bell and an oak carrier basket with two cup holders. Nespresso Sweden also described a mug holder. These distinctive touches linked the bicycle’s everyday city-bike design to the capsule material story. Nespresso’s product story describes the basket and cup holders.

Anyone searching for a RE:CYCLE today should check directly with Vélosophy or current second-hand listings rather than assume the original edition is still for sale.

At the time, Nespresso CEO Jean-Marc Duvoisin said, “Through our collaboration with Vélosophy, we’re illustrating to coffee lovers the potential of recycling their aluminum Nespresso capsules.” Vélosophy CEO and founder Jimmy Östholm said, “We created Vélosophy with a clear purpose: to have a positive impact on the world.” Both were statements published with the 2019 announcement.
