The Vantrue M2 is a front-and-rear dash cam built into a large, mirror-mounted display: it shows a live feed from its separate rear camera while recording both directions. That layout can make the rear view more useful when the vehicle’s normal sightline is obstructed, but it also means planning for mirror fit, rear-camera placement and cable routing. Vantrue’s specifications are promising on paper; the available independent review evidence does not establish real-world image quality or installation performance.
What the Vantrue M2 is—and how the mirror display works
Vantrue calls the M2 a “Streaming Media Rear View Mirror.” It clips over the vehicle’s existing rear-view mirror and uses a 12-inch touchscreen to display video from the separately installed rear camera. The camera records front and rear footage; the screen is not itself a substitute for installing and connecting that rear camera. Vantrue’s product page lists a 1920 × 480 IPS anti-glare display, GPS, HDR, loop recording, a supercapacitor and adjustable reversing-aid lines. These are manufacturer-listed features, not independent test findings.
Compared with a conventional windshield-mounted dash cam, the main trade-off is the display. The M2 gives the rear-camera feed a prominent position where the driver normally looks for a mirror, rather than relying on a small camera screen or a phone app. That may suit a vehicle whose passengers, cargo or design obstruct the rear window. It also makes screen size and visibility part of the everyday experience, and the display may not suit every driver or vehicle.
What the specifications say about recording
Vantrue specifies maximum recording of 1440p front and 1080p rear, at up to 30 frames per second. It also lists HDR. Those figures describe the stated configuration; they do not establish how clearly the M2 captures license plates, how it performs at night or how footage looks in difficult lighting. No measured plate-reading results or comparative lab tests are established here, so treat image-quality claims as unverified until you can assess sample footage from conditions similar to your own driving.

The rear camera is listed as waterproof to IP67 and can be mounted at the license plate or rear windshield with the included bracket, according to Vantrue. The best location depends on the car: a plate mount may provide a useful view but requires routing a cable to the rear exterior, while a rear-windshield mount avoids that exterior location but may be affected by the glass, wiper coverage or vehicle layout. The included reversing-aid lines are adjustable, but should not be treated as a substitute for checking mirrors and surroundings while reversing.
The listing also supports horizontal mirroring and a 180-degree image flip. These are display-orientation options that can help with some mounting positions, including upside-down installation; they do not demonstrate compatibility with every truck, RV or other vehicle.

Check fit and cable routing before buying
Because the M2 sits over the existing mirror, check the camera’s dimensions against the mirror and surrounding area in your vehicle. Consider whether it can be mounted securely without blocking controls, sensors or the driver’s view, and whether the display position will be comfortable. The product description and an older Tech Advisor review describe the clip-on mirror format, but neither establishes fit in every vehicle.
Plan the rear-camera cable run before committing. A front-to-rear installation can mean routing cable along the headliner, trim and rear hatch or trunk area; a plate-mounted camera may require an additional route out of the cabin. The exact path depends on the vehicle. Check that the cable can reach without interfering with airbags, moving panels or hatch operation, and consider whether you are comfortable with the installation or need professional help. A mirror display only works as intended when the rear camera is positioned and connected appropriately.

Budget for storage and parking-mode power
A microSD card is not included. Vantrue’s listing states support for cards up to 512 GB, but a capacity ceiling alone does not identify a suitable card or its performance requirements. Consult the current M2 manual before choosing one, and confirm that the card is compatible with the unit you buy. Recording duration will depend on card capacity, recording settings and how footage is overwritten or protected.
Vantrue says 24-hour parking mode requires a hardwire kit or an external battery pack. That makes parking surveillance an additional installation and cost decision, rather than a capability that is ready to use from the box. The listing names a hardwire kit, ASIN B07G9WTWB9, but check current compatibility with the M2 version and your vehicle before purchasing any power accessory. Also consider how a hardwired setup will draw power from the vehicle and whether installation is within your comfort level.

Price, software and support
Vantrue’s product page surfaced a price of $249.99 when accessed in 2026, but product prices and stock can change. Tech Advisor’s review, published around 2022, recorded £229.99 on Amazon UK and $249 on Amazon US at that time; those are historical prices, not current quotes. Compare the live price with the cost of a compatible memory card and any parking-mode power equipment you intend to use.
Vantrue provides an M2 GPS player for Windows and Mac and publishes firmware resources on its support page. The listed VTM22G.V53 update says it fixes an SD-card writing problem; older dated entries mention rear-camera rotation, the GPS icon, lag and missing footage. Firmware listings can change, so check the current support page for the version and instructions for your unit. The manual’s update guidance says to copy the firmware file to the card for the dash cam to recognize it, rather than opening or renaming it on a computer. Follow the current official instructions before updating.

Who should consider the Vantrue M2?
- Consider it if you want a large, mirror-positioned rear-camera display as well as front-and-rear recording, and your vehicle can accommodate the mirror and cable run.
- Think twice if you want a simple front camera with minimal installation, do not want to add a memory card or parking-mode power equipment, or cannot confirm a secure and comfortable mirror fit.
- Before deciding, compare the current total cost, assess rear-camera placement and cable routing, and look for footage examples that answer your image-quality needs. The available review evidence does not establish a measured performance advantage over conventional dash cams.
