VanMoof’s S6 redesign makes credible changes to how the bikes shift and can be serviced, but it does not yet prove they will be reliable over years of ownership. The S6 is the first new model family developed under McLaren Applied’s ownership after VanMoof’s 2023 bankruptcy; its mechanical three-speed hub, modular wiring and published warranty are tangible changes, not a long-term reliability record. Buyers should compare the S6 and S6 Open by fit and practical use, and confirm nearby authorized service and applicable warranty terms before paying a premium.
What changed after VanMoof’s bankruptcy?
VanMoof went through bankruptcy in 2023 and was acquired by McLaren Applied. The S6 and S6 Open are the first new e-bike family developed under the new ownership. That history matters to a purchase decision because buyers are weighing not only the hardware but also the support behind a connected, proprietary product. It is not, by itself, evidence that the new bikes will repeat the old company’s problems—or that they will avoid them.
The Verge’s June 10, 2025 hands-on described the S6 as promising but said longevity would have to be earned. VanMoof co-CEO Eliott Wertheimer said the company had reviewed its lineup and made improvements; that is the company’s position, not an independent reliability finding. VanMoof announced the S6’s UK arrival on April 21, 2026, saying the models had already been on sale in Europe since summer 2025. The UK announcement therefore reflects later market availability, not the original launch.
What the S6 redesign does—and does not—establish
Mechanical shifting and modular wiring
The Verge reported that the S6 replaces the earlier electronic shifting approach with a mechanical three-speed AutoShift hub. It also reported modular wiring intended to make redesigned components easier to service. Those are specific design choices that could simplify parts of ownership and repair; they do not show how often the bikes will fail or how quickly repairs will be completed.

VanMoof’s current S6 support information describes the Control Core, app unlocking and Touch Unlock. The product page also advertises always-on tracking and Theft Proof as an add-on. Treat theft recovery and replacement as company service promises: check the current terms, including any period or eligibility limits, rather than assuming that the feature guarantees recovery.
Ride impressions and reported hardware
Thomas Ricker of The Verge rode a pre-production S6 for about 15 minutes. He described the shifting as smooth and intuitive and the ride as pleasant, while explicitly saying that such a short ride could not establish reliability. Those are useful first impressions, not a durability test.
The Verge reported a 487 Wh Panasonic battery integrated into the frame but removable for service, a charge time of roughly four hours from 25% to 100%, and launch-era weights of 23.5 kg for the S6 and 22.5 kg for the S6 Open. Check VanMoof’s live technical information for current specifications. The reported weights are worth considering if you regularly carry a bike up stairs; battery access and charging arrangements matter if you need to remove the battery or plan around where the bike can be charged.

VanMoof currently advertises a maximum speed of up to 25 km/h, 68 Nm of motor torque, a stated range of 60–150 km and four power levels. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured outcomes; the range should not be read as a guarantee of what every rider will achieve.
S6 or S6 Open: choose by fit and daily use
The main distinction is the frame and fit, not a different set of headline motor claims. VanMoof describes the Open as having a lower frame and a more upright riding position. Its product page gives manufacturer-recommended rider-height ranges; a test ride is preferable where possible, especially near either end of a listed range.

The listed height ranges overlap, so height alone does not settle the choice. Consider how easily you can mount and dismount, the posture you prefer, and whether the bike’s weight and dimensions work with your storage and carrying routine. The reviewed materials do not establish separate prices for the two models.

Warranty: the regional limits that matter
VanMoof’s Warranty & Support page, updated May 7, 2026, specifies different limits for battery, motor and ECU coverage by region. For those components, the time or distance limit applies whichever comes first. The same page lists three years for frame defects and parts/accessories. Read the complete current terms for definitions, exclusions and claim conditions.

VanMoof’s warranty page identifies modifications, improper maintenance, accident damage and non-approved replacement parts among conditions that can void coverage. It directs claims through a local VanMoof Partner and requires original proof of purchase; the page says VanMoof settles covered parts and labor directly. Confirm the terms for your country and ask the Partner how the process works for an S6 before purchase.

In June 2025, The Verge reported a network of about 250 service shops and 130 sales partners across 13 countries. That is a launch-era snapshot, not a current count or evidence that a particular shop has capacity to service S6 bikes. VanMoof’s August 28, 2026 Partner Hub post describes a warranty workflow dependent on Repair Mode and a parts-ordering process for partners. It indicates a structured process, but does not establish local availability, repair turnaround times or claim outcomes.

- Ask a nearby VanMoof Partner whether it currently services the S6 and S6 Open, not just older models.
- Ask who handles warranty diagnosis and repairs, what information or app access you need to provide, and how parts are ordered.
- Confirm where you would take the bike and what happens if the local Partner cannot complete the repair.
- Check the applicable warranty terms and keep your original proof of purchase.
The answers may vary by country and shop. A network figure cannot substitute for confirming the service route that would apply to your own bike.
Does the S6 deserve buyers’ trust?
The evidence supports a measured answer. The mechanical hub, modular wiring, updated control system, partner-based warranty process and published coverage are concrete signs of a changed product and support approach. But the available coverage does not provide an independently published S6 failure rate, a multi-year durability study, repair-turnaround statistics or warranty-claim outcome rates. Owner anecdotes, positive or negative, cannot supply a representative failure rate.
Ricker wrote in The Verge’s June 10, 2025 hands-on, “The real trick will be convincing riders to pay €3,298 for the promise of longevity.” The Verge reported that launch price, and VanMoof’s product page listed €3,298 on October 8, 2026; prices and availability can change, so check the live listing for your market. The price makes the distinction important: design improvements can make confidence more reasonable, but only sustained ownership and service outcomes can demonstrate longevity.
What to compare before buying a premium e-bike
For a meaningful comparison with another premium e-bike, look beyond advertised range and motor output. Check the total price in your market, gearing and motor design, battery access and charging, real repair options near you, warranty limits for your country, and the terms for app-dependent features and theft services. The information here does not establish a complete competitor comparison, so it cannot support naming a better bike overall.
