Neither a V-8 nor a turbocharged V-6 is automatically the better choice. In the 2026 U.S. Ford F-150, the 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 and 5.0L Ti-VCT V-8 are both rated at 400 hp, but the V-6 is rated at 500 lb-ft of torque and the V-8 at 410 lb-ft. Their maximum available towing ratings also differ, though the truck’s exact configuration determines what it can tow. Compare the specific model year and powertrain—not cylinder count alone.
2026 F-150: 3.5 EcoBoost vs. 5.0 V-8 specs
Ford’s current U.S. model-line specifications give both engines the same peak horsepower but different torque and maximum available towing figures. These are manufacturer ratings for the 2026 F-150 lineup, not guarantees for every truck bearing that engine.

What the power figures do—and do not—tell you
The listed 500 lb-ft versus 410 lb-ft means the EcoBoost has the higher rated peak torque in this comparison. Ford’s 2024 sheet also places that peak at a lower engine speed for the V-6. Those figures can help describe the engines, but peak torque alone does not tell you how a truck feels in every driving situation or how quickly it accelerates with a particular load. Transmission behavior, gearing, vehicle configuration, and the way power is delivered all matter.

Both engines’ 400-hp rating is a reminder that cylinder count is not a useful substitute for comparing the actual specifications. The EcoBoost uses twin turbochargers and intercooling; the V-8 is naturally aspirated. That is a real architectural distinction, but it does not by itself settle questions of sound, throttle response, longevity, or repair expense.
Towing: use the rating for the exact truck
For 2026 F-150s, Ford lists maximum available towing of 13,500 lb with the 3.5L EcoBoost and 12,800 lb with the 5.0L V-8. These are lineup maxima, not ratings that apply to every truck equipped with the engine. Ford notes that towing capacity varies with cab, accessories, passengers, and configuration. The actual truck’s rating—and the trailer and load you intend to pull—should guide the decision, rather than the engine-only headline maximum. Fuel economy: keep model year and configuration attached
A government report on 2017 F-150 test vehicles cites EPA combined label figures of 20 mpg for a 3.5L EcoBoost 4×4 and 17 mpg for a 5.0L V-8 4×4, both paired with the same 10-speed automatic. These are historical label figures for those specified 2017 trucks, not current ratings, real-world test results, or proof that a turbo V-6 always uses less fuel. The report is NHTSA’s laboratory testing report on a 2017 Ford F-150 3.5L V-6 EcoBoost with a 10-speed transmission.
For a current purchase, compare the same model year, drivetrain, transmission, and closely matched truck configuration using the applicable EPA labels. Driving conditions and load also affect fuel use; an older model-year comparison cannot establish what a current pair of trucks will consume.

Reliability, service, and ownership cost
Cylinder count or turbocharging alone does not establish which engine will be more reliable or cheaper to own. A fair ownership comparison would use matched vehicles and consider purchase price, fuel use, maintenance schedule, warranty coverage, and local repair costs. The figures above do not provide a comparative long-term reliability study or a current matched ownership-cost analysis, so they cannot support a universal winner on those questions.
How to choose between the engines
- Start with your truck’s job. If towing is central, identify the cab, drivetrain, axle and package, then verify the specific truck’s capacity against trailer weight and payload needs. Passengers and cargo count too.
- Compare like with like. Match model year, trim, drivetrain, transmission, and equipment when comparing fuel economy, price, or capability. A maximum rating from one configuration is not a fair comparison with a differently equipped truck.
- Check the ownership numbers you will actually pay. Compare purchase prices, expected fuel use, service requirements, warranty terms, and repair costs in your area rather than assuming either architecture is cheaper.
- Drive the exact powertrain if possible. Engine sound and response are preference-sensitive; a test drive in the truck you would buy is more useful than treating subjective impressions as universal facts.
So, what’s the best engine?
For the 2026 F-150 comparison, the EcoBoost V-6 has higher rated torque and a higher maximum available tow rating, while both engines share Ford’s 400-hp rating. The V-8’s naturally aspirated layout and the V-6’s twin-turbo architecture may appeal to different drivers, but neither fact alone establishes a better choice for reliability, economy, or ownership cost. Choose by the exact truck’s capability, matched fuel and cost information, and how its powertrain suits your use.
