Modern automatics have the edge in average fuel economy, but whether you prefer shifting gears, how you use the car, and the specific vehicle matter more than a blanket rule. For a fair comparison, check the exact model year, engine and transmission—and treat cost, maintenance and reliability as model-specific questions.
What the evidence says about fuel economy
The long-standing idea that manuals always use less fuel is out of date. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compared vehicles offered with both transmission types and the same engine. Manuals were more efficient through about 2010; modern automatics are more efficient on average. EPA attributes the shift to improvements in automatic transmission design and the faster growth in the number of gears in automatics. It also cautions that declining availability of manuals makes recent comparisons less representative. EPA Automotive Trends
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) summarized that comparison in 2020: “Beginning with MY 2016, improvements in the efficiency of automatic transmissions have made them more fuel efficient than manual transmissions.” That historical threshold comes from an EPA comparison extending through model year 2018, whose 2018 data were preliminary. This is an average trend, not a guarantee that an automatic will beat a manual in every pair of cars. Compare the EPA fuel-economy figures for the exact model year, engine and transmission you are considering.

How to compare the real-life trade-offs

What fuel-economy labels can—and cannot—tell you
EPA fuel-economy label figures are estimates designed to help consumers compare vehicles under repeatable, national-average driving conditions. They are not promises of the mileage every driver will achieve. Use the label for the specific model year and configuration rather than assuming that an aggregate trend predicts an individual car’s results. EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report presents final information for model year 2024 alongside preliminary projections for model year 2025; those projections should not be treated as final results. Which should you choose?
Start with the actual cars available to you, not a general claim that one transmission is always cheaper, more reliable or more efficient. Check the transmission design and EPA figures for each exact configuration, then weigh those against your own preference for shifting gears and the way you drive. The cited evidence supports an average fuel-economy advantage for modern automatics, but it does not settle subjective driving preference or the cost and reliability comparison for a particular vehicle.
