The U.S. Postal Service’s Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) is a purpose-built mail truck made by Oshkosh Defense, with both battery-electric and gas-powered versions covered by the procurement. USPS’s May 2026 plan calls for 45,000 battery-electric NGDVs as part of a broader acquisition of 106,000 vehicles, including at least 66,000 electric delivery vehicles. Those are planned totals, not a count of vehicles already delivered.
What the USPS Next Generation Delivery Vehicle is
The NGDV is a USPS delivery vehicle designed for postal operations, not a consumer model. USPS awarded the contract to Oshkosh Defense in February 2021. The procurement allows battery-electric and conventional gas-powered configurations.
The NGDV is one part of a larger fleet modernization effort. USPS also plans to acquire commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) electric delivery vehicles, which are distinct from the purpose-built NGDV. The agency’s May 15, 2026 fact sheet lists 45,000 battery-electric NGDVs and 21,000 COTS battery-electric vehicles in a planned 106,000-vehicle acquisition.
What “electric option” means—and how the plan changed
The program’s electric share has grown across successive announcements. On March 24, 2022, USPS announced an initial order for 50,000 NGDVs, including a minimum of 10,019 battery-electric vehicles. USPS said it had identified 10,019 routes as promising initial applications for electric vehicles.

In December 2022, the agency announced plans for at least 60,000 NGDVs, with at least 45,000 electric, plus 21,000 COTS electric delivery vehicles. It said it anticipated 100% electric acquisitions for NGDV and COTS orders delivered from 2026 onward, subject to market availability and operating feasibility. That was the plan announced at the time; it should not be read as confirmation that every later vehicle order or delivery has followed that schedule.
The latest located USPS fact sheet, dated May 15, 2026, describes this planned mix:

What features USPS says the truck has
USPS describes the NGDV as offering better visibility, ergonomic seating, air conditioning, safety improvements, and more user-friendly operation. Its 2022 order announcement also listed 360-degree cameras, airbags, advanced braking and traction control, and a front- and rear-collision avoidance system with visual and audio warnings and automatic braking. USPS says the truck has increased cargo capacity.

USPS says deployment priorities include delivery volume, charging-infrastructure readiness, and operational needs. That means the electric version is not simply assigned everywhere at once: route suitability and the ability to support charging are part of the agency’s stated deployment approach.

The OIG’s report also documents that replacing the existing fleet depends on funding and supplier conditions. A national acquisition target therefore does not by itself establish the pace of deliveries or the number operating at a particular location.
What the “preview” refers to
USPS reported that an electric NGDV was displayed at its Washington, D.C., headquarters on November 6, 2024, and said NGDVs were already making deliveries around the country. The official material also includes USPS Digital Media b-roll posted January 14, 2026, described as showing the NGDV alongside the Metris, eTransit, and ProMaster. Neither item, on its own, identifies an unspecified preview event or establishes individual vehicle quantities or powertrains for all the vehicles shown.
