Yes. USPS originally expected its new Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDVs) on carrier routes in late 2023, but the first production electric NGDVs did not begin serving routes until September 2024. The USPS Office of Inspector General later said the custom-vehicle selection, acquisition and deployment process ran about six years longer than the Postal Service’s initial schedule.
How far behind schedule are the USPS electric trucks?
The clearest comparison is between USPS’s April 2022 forecast and the first production vehicles entering service. In testimony to Congress, USPS said NGDVs were expected to begin appearing on carrier routes in late 2023. The USPS Office of Inspector General (OIG) reported that production electric NGDVs began serving routes in September 2024—roughly nine months after that public expectation. The OIG’s broader retrospective assessment was that the custom-vehicle selection, acquisition and deployment process took about six years longer than USPS’s initial deployment schedule. USPS OIG and USPS testimony, April 2022
Those measures describe different things: the nine-month comparison is against the publicly stated expectation for vehicles to appear on routes; the six-year figure is the OIG’s assessment of the overall process against USPS’s initial deployment schedule. They should not be treated as competing estimates of one precise delay.
What has USPS delivered—and what do the fleet numbers mean?
Counts vary by date and by what is being counted. USPS fleet updates combine custom NGDVs with commercial off-the-shelf electric vans and other vehicles, so the larger fleet totals are not NGDV-only delivery figures.

USPS’s May 15, 2026 fact page described a plan for 106,000 new vehicles, including at least 66,000 battery-electric vehicles: 45,000 electric NGDVs and 21,000 commercial off-the-shelf electric vehicles. Why are the new USPS electric mail trucks delayed?
A custom vehicle takes longer to bring into production
The NGDV is a purpose-built, right-hand-drive delivery vehicle. The OIG said it took more than six years to select a supplier and more than three years from contract award to the first production vehicles. By contrast, USPS acquired commercially available Ford E-Transits in about one year. That comparison illustrates the longer path involved in developing and deploying a custom vehicle; it does not prove that any single procurement step caused the delay. USPS OIG

Oshkosh says the production ramp took longer and cost more
Oshkosh’s January 2026 filing states that the NGDV production ramp took longer and cost more than the company anticipated. It identifies equipment-design issues, supplier quality and performance, and the challenge of scaling production as risks that could continue to affect output. The filing does not quantify how much each factor contributed to the delay. Oshkosh SEC filing
USPS characterized the rollout differently in a December 2025 update: fleet management senior director Justin Glass said, “The new fleet rollout is proceeding well, aligned with our plan.” That is the agency’s assessment of its broader fleet rollout; it does not change the OIG’s retrospective schedule comparison or turn aggregate fleet counts into NGDV delivery totals. When will USPS get the rest of the electric trucks?
USPS’s stated target is 45,000 electric NGDVs as part of its broader plan for 106,000 new vehicles. The agency’s May 2026 fact page says at least 66,000 of the planned vehicles will be battery-electric, split between 45,000 NGDVs and 21,000 commercial off-the-shelf EVs. These are plans, not a confirmed delivery timetable for each truck; the sources reviewed do not provide a current NGDV-only delivery schedule or a verified October 2026 service count. USPS fact page

USPS’s fleet program includes two distinct kinds of electric delivery vehicle:
Rank #4
- 📬 2.5 Inches 1:72 Scale
- 📬 Die Cast Metal
- 📬 Official USPS LLV Grumman
- Electric NGDVs: purpose-built, right-hand-drive vehicles designed for postal delivery.
- Commercial off-the-shelf EVs: existing models, including Ford E-Transits, acquired for postal use.
The distinction matters when reading progress reports. A figure for all battery-powered vehicles, all new vehicles, or NGDV orders cannot be used as the number of electric NGDVs actually serving routes. The OIG’s 134 figure is explicitly electric NGDVs in service through May 2025; USPS’s 8,500 figure is battery-powered vehicles across the broader fleet as of December 2025.
