Use low gear or your car’s engine-braking mode to help control speed on a steep descent. The selector may show B, L, 2, or selectable gear steps, depending on the vehicle. Check your owner’s manual for the correct control and procedure; keep using the service brakes when needed.
When should you use low gear in an automatic car?
Low gear is most useful when descending a steep hill and you want the engine to help manage speed. A lower gear step increases engine braking, so the vehicle can slow more when you lift off the accelerator. It also raises engine revolutions. Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser manual describes this relationship and notes that the transmission may restrict a requested downshift for safety or driving performance: Toyota 2026 Land Cruiser Owner’s Manual.
The control’s purpose varies by car. Toyota’s 2026 Prius manual describes B as a position for engine braking or strong braking when the accelerator is released on steep downward slopes: Toyota 2026 Prius Owner’s Manual. Other automatic cars may use selectable gear steps or an L/2 position. Do not assume that a particular letter always selects the same gear across vehicles.
How do you use low gear going downhill?
- Check your vehicle’s manual. Find the instructions for the transmission selector or engine-braking mode, including when it may be selected and any speed or operating restrictions.
- Select the specified range or mode. Use the control the manual identifies for a descent; its label and operation depend on the vehicle.
- Choose a safe speed for the road. Low gear helps control speed but does not make a steep or slippery road safe at any speed.
- Use the service brakes when needed. Engine braking supplements the brakes; it does not replace them.
- Pay attention to the vehicle’s response. A transmission may refuse a requested downshift. Follow the vehicle’s indication and manual rather than forcing or repeatedly requesting a gear it will not select.
Why not rely on the brakes alone on a long descent?
Braking continuously can overheat the service brakes and reduce their effectiveness. Toyota’s 2024 RAV4 manual warns of this risk and advises using engine braking to maintain a safe speed on a steep hill: Toyota 2024 RAV4 Owner’s Manual. Engine braking can reduce how much continuous braking is needed, but apply the service brakes whenever necessary to maintain control.

What do B, L, 2, and selectable gears mean?
These labels are not interchangeable instructions. Manufacturers may design a control to provide engine braking, select a particular gear, or limit how high the transmission can shift. The exact behavior—and the circumstances in which the car permits a downshift—must come from the manual for your make, model, year, market, and powertrain.
Older automatic controls may also have explicit speed limits or cautions about prolonged use, hill climbing, or hard towing. Those restrictions apply to the vehicle they were written for, not to every car with an L or 2 position. Do not borrow a shift speed or limit from another model’s manual.

Low gear is not four-wheel-drive low range
Here, “low gear” means a lower transmission gear or an engine-braking setting in an automatic car. A four-wheel-drive low-range setting is a different drivetrain feature with its own operating rules. Consult the relevant section of your vehicle’s manual before using either control.
