Used Tata Tigor Petrol vs CNG: Which One Makes Sense for Your Driving?

A used Tigor iCNG can suit regular drivers with convenient CNG access; petrol may be better for lower mileage, stronger listed output, or luggage needs. Compare the exact car and calculate savings using local prices.

A used factory CNG Tigor makes the most sense when you drive regularly, have convenient access to CNG, and expect fuel savings to offset any higher purchase price. Petrol is often the better fit for lower or unpredictable mileage, buyers who need its listed 419 L boot, or drivers who prefer the higher brochure output. The deciding factors are your routes and costs—and the year, trim, transmission, condition, and paperwork of the specific car.

What differs between the petrol and CNG Tigor?

The petrol and factory-fitted iCNG versions share the Tigor name, but they are not identical in output, fuel choice, or luggage practicality. Tata Motors’ 2025 brochure lists a 1,199 cc, three-cylinder engine. Its figures are manufacturer specifications for the listed configuration, not guarantees for every model year or trim.

How the output difference may feel

The brochure’s iCNG figures are lower than its petrol figures. That gives petrol the stronger listed output, but the numbers alone do not tell you how a particular used car will feel in traffic, with passengers, or on a gradient. Confirm the transmission and test-drive the candidate car in the way you expect to use it. A comparison based only on peak figures cannot tell you how worn or well-maintained either example is, or whether its response suits your routes.

Tata’s 2024 iCNG brochure describes the system as allowing drivers to “Start your vehicle directly in the CNG mode.” The exact feature set and operation should be verified for the car’s year and variant: Tata Motors’ iCNG brochure. Do not assume that a feature described in a later brochure appears in every earlier used listing.

Transmission is another reason to compare exact examples, not just fuel labels. The 2025 brochure lists petrol with a five-speed manual and AMT, while its iCNG range includes manual and AMT offerings by variant. The iCNG AMT arrived later than the original iCNG: Tata announced the Tigor iCNG in January 2022 and introduced AMT to its CNG range in February 2024. A 2022 manual and a later AMT are therefore not equivalent listings. Check the year and variant from the car’s documents, then drive the actual transmission before deciding.

Boot space needs a hands-on check

Tata lists 419 L for petrol, but does not give a directly comparable conventional boot-volume figure for iCNG in the cited 2025 brochure. It says the twin CNG cylinders sit below the luggage area; that placement does not establish how much of the boot you can use for your own bags, stroller, tools, or other regular cargo. Bring representative luggage to inspect the exact car before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 70 L figure sometimes associated with the CNG system is cylinder water capacity, not usable gas volume or luggage capacity. Do not compare it with petrol boot litres or treat it as a statement of how much gas the cylinders hold in normal use. Instead, look at the shape and access of the actual boot and test the items that matter to your household. If you regularly carry bulky luggage, the petrol brochure’s stated volume is a useful reference point, but even that does not replace checking the individual car.

Which fuel is cheaper for your driving?

CNG can reduce fuel expense per kilometre, but whether that makes a used iCNG Tigor the better purchase depends on the local pump prices, your real economy, your fuel mix, the upfront price difference, and how long you plan to keep the car. There is no dependable universal break-even mileage without those inputs. A lower running cost is only one part of the ownership decision; the condition and price of the specific car, route convenience, and how much of your driving you expect to do on each fuel also matter.

Autocar India reported averages of 12.7 km/l on petrol and 21.35 km/kg on CNG in its Tigor test cycles in May 2022. These are a publication’s test results, not a promise for a different car, driver, route, traffic pattern, or condition. Its Mumbai fuel prices and rupees-per-kilometre examples are historical and should not be carried into a current budget. See Autocar India’s May 2022 Tigor CNG test.

The two economy figures also use different units: kilometres per litre for petrol and kilometres per kilogram for CNG. To make them meaningful for a cost comparison, calculate the cost per kilometre for each fuel using its own local price and a plausible economy estimate. Do not compare the raw economy numbers as if litres and kilograms were interchangeable, and do not assume that a publication’s test cycle will match your stop-start traffic or regular routes.

Estimate your own running cost

  1. Use current local prices. Note the petrol price per litre and CNG price per kilogram where you actually refuel. Petrol prices are market-determined; the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell provides general information, not a current quote for every city: PPAC. Prices and access are local considerations, so avoid using an old Mumbai example as a present-day estimate for another place.
  2. Choose a conservative economy estimate. Use your own records from a comparable car if available. Otherwise treat the 2022 Autocar figures as historical test references only, and allow for traffic, load, route, driving style, and vehicle condition. If you are unsure, work with a cautious estimate rather than assuming best-case efficiency.
  3. Calculate cost per distance for each fuel. For petrol, divide local price per litre by your expected kilometres per litre. For CNG, divide price per kilogram by expected kilometres per kilogram. Both results are expressed as a fuel cost per kilometre, which makes the comparison easier to interpret.
  4. Account for how you will actually drive. Estimate the share of distance on each fuel if you expect to use both. For a factory iCNG car, do not assume all trips or conditions will match a test cycle. Think about the routes you repeat and the stations you can realistically reach rather than relying on a general claim about CNG availability.
  5. Compare the fuel saving with the purchase-price gap. Multiply the expected per-kilometre difference by the distance you expect to drive during ownership. Then compare that result with the iCNG car’s added cost, if any, while considering condition and maintenance history too. If you expect to keep the car briefly or cover few kilometres, the fuel saving has less time and distance over which to offset an upfront difference.

This is a planning calculation, not a prediction of resale value or repair costs. Fuel savings can be outweighed by paying more for a particular used car, keeping it briefly, or finding CNG inconvenient on your usual routes. The evidence here does not establish current used-car asking prices or CNG-station access in your area. It is therefore better to calculate with your own figures than to rely on a universal mileage threshold or an old published rupee-per-kilometre number.

When comparing listings, first work out the running-cost difference you think is plausible, then ask whether that difference is large enough to matter over your likely ownership period. A small theoretical saving is not a reason to overlook a poorer service history or questionable paperwork. Conversely, a well-documented iCNG car at a sensible price may suit regular use even if you cannot predict every kilometre precisely. The calculation is a way to frame the decision, not a substitute for judging the car.

When petrol is the more sensible choice

  • You drive relatively few kilometres, so any per-kilometre fuel saving may take a long time to offset an iCNG price premium.
  • Your mileage is irregular or your usual routes make CNG refuelling inconvenient. The right question is whether CNG works for the places you actually travel, not whether it is available somewhere in your wider area.
  • You need the listed 419 L petrol boot, subject to confirming the actual car’s condition and usable space. Frequent luggage use makes an in-person packing check especially important.
  • You prefer the brochure’s higher listed output of 86 PS and 113 Nm over the iCNG figures in CNG mode. These are brochure specifications, not a promise that a particular used petrol car will feel stronger if its condition is poor.
  • A petrol candidate is substantially better maintained or better documented than the CNG alternative you are considering.
  • You want to avoid making a decision based on an uncertain fuel-price or mileage assumption. Choosing the better-condition car can matter more than chasing an estimated saving that depends on local prices and future use.

Petrol is not automatically the better value just because its boot figure is clearer or its listed output is higher. Compare the asking price and vehicle history against an iCNG alternative of similar age, mileage, trim, ownership, and condition. If the petrol car is older, poorly documented, or in worse condition, its fuel type alone does not make it the stronger used-car choice.

When factory iCNG is the better fit

  • You cover regular, substantial distances and can refuel with CNG conveniently.
  • Your own cost estimate indicates that fuel savings over your expected ownership period could justify the candidate car’s price difference.
  • The actual car’s luggage space works for your needs after you inspect it with the items you normally carry.
  • You have confirmed its model year, variant, transmission, service history, condition, and factory fuel-system documentation.
  • You understand the CNG economy evidence as a dated test reference, not a guaranteed outcome for your driving.

Tata announced the Tigor iCNG in January 2022 and the iCNG AMT in February 2024. That timeline matters when comparing used listings: a 2022 manual and a later AMT are not interchangeable simply because both are described as CNG Tigor. Check the exact variant and equipment rather than inferring them from the fuel type. See Tata’s announcements: January 2022 Tigor iCNG launch and February 2024 iCNG AMT announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Factory iCNG is most compelling when the practical conditions line up: your routes make refuelling workable, your mileage gives the running-cost difference enough distance to accumulate, and the particular car is in sound condition with records that match its description. The original purchase-price gap is not the only consideration in a used-car search; each listing is priced and maintained differently. Judge the candidate against comparable petrol and iCNG examples, rather than assuming all CNG versions carry the same premium or that a premium will always be recovered.

How to assess a used Tigor before choosing

  1. Match the listing to the car. Verify model year, variant, transmission, and fuel type against the registration certificate and vehicle documents. Do not compare listings as though all years and trims have the same specifications. An advertisement may use a broad model name; confirm what is actually being sold.
  2. Compare like with like. For petrol and iCNG candidates, account for age, mileage, ownership, service record, accident or repair history, and condition before treating the asking-price difference as a fuel-system premium. The cited research provides no current used-car asking prices, so base a comparison on the listings you are actually considering.
  3. Inspect the cabin and boot in person. Try the seats, visibility, controls, and luggage arrangement. Load the things you expect to carry; brochure figures cannot answer whether the exact car suits your routine. Check the boot with the rear seats in the configuration you normally use, and do not assume that a stated volume describes every useful shape or loading need.
  4. Drive the car you may buy. Confirm manual or AMT operation and assess the response under your normal conditions. If possible, test the car in the fuel mode and on the kind of route relevant to your use. Arrange a qualified independent inspection if you need help judging mechanical condition. A test drive cannot replace checking its documents and service history.
  5. Review fuel-system records. For a factory iCNG car, verify that the vehicle and its documentation correspond. For an aftermarket conversion, check the kit paperwork, installation, and registration records rather than assuming it has the same status as a factory car.
  6. Keep the records tied to the exact vehicle. Check that the registration details and service or conversion paperwork refer to the candidate you are viewing. If details do not match or the seller cannot explain a discrepancy, pause the comparison rather than assuming the issue is harmless.
  7. Make a total-use comparison, not just a fuel comparison. Put the purchase price, expected fuel cost, likely ownership period, and practical fit side by side. The available evidence does not supply a forecast for maintenance, resale, or repair costs, so do not present the fuel calculation as a complete ownership-cost prediction.

For a private used-car decision, an independent inspection may help assess a specific listing, but it is optional and no particular provider is endorsed here. The important point is to avoid turning a brochure specification or seller description into a substitute for inspecting the car in front of you.

Factory iCNG versus an aftermarket conversion

A factory iCNG Tigor and a petrol Tigor converted later are different purchase cases. For an aftermarket kit, check that the conversion is documented and that the registration certificate (RC) reflects the fuel-system change. IRDAI says a fitted CNG/LPG kit should be reported to the registering regional transport authority for notation: IRDAI guidance on CNG/LPG kits.

Do not treat paperwork as a substitute for a technical inspection. The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell says a suitable workshop should assess a vehicle’s technical suitability for conversion. That guidance is especially relevant when evaluating a used converted car; it does not establish the condition or safety of any particular installation: PPAC information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask to see the kit and installation documents, and check the RC rather than relying on a verbal assurance that the conversion has been recorded. Then have the actual vehicle and installation assessed by an appropriate workshop. These checks address different questions: registration notation concerns the vehicle’s records, while a technical suitability assessment concerns the car and conversion. Neither alone tells you that a particular used car is in good condition.

Do not compare an aftermarket conversion’s advertised running cost directly with a factory iCNG car as though the vehicles had identical histories. The evidence here does not establish the quality or condition of any individual converted car. Treat it as a separate candidate, verify its records, and include its actual condition in the decision.

A quick decision framework

Your situation More likely fit What to verify
Regular high mileage, convenient CNG access, and a favourable calculated fuel-cost difference Factory iCNG Exact year and trim, transmission, boot usability, condition, and service and fuel-system records
Low or unpredictable mileage, or inconvenient CNG access Petrol That the specific car’s price, condition, and history make sense
Frequent luggage use or a need for the listed boot volume Petrol may suit better Test the actual boot with your regular luggage; the iCNG brochure gives no comparable conventional volume
A converted petrol car advertised as CNG Assess separately from factory iCNG Kit and installation records, technical condition, and RC notation
Two similar cars but uncertain whether the fuel saving offsets a price gap Calculate before choosing Current local fuel rates, cautious economy assumptions, expected distance, and planned ownership period
Listings with different years or gearboxes Compare exact variants rather than fuel labels Model year, trim, manual or AMT, equipment, and vehicle documents

What to verify in the listing and paperwork

  • Model year, exact variant, and manual or AMT transmission.
  • Registration details and fuel entry matching the car being sold.
  • Service and ownership records, plus any accident or repair history.
  • For an aftermarket conversion, kit documentation and RC notation.
  • Whether the car’s actual condition and asking price justify choosing it over the alternative fuel version.
  • Whether the boot works for your usual cargo after loading it in person, rather than relying only on the fuel-system description.
  • Whether the cost estimate uses current prices where you refuel and assumptions appropriate to your routes.

Is the Tigor CNG worth it for daily running?

It can be worth considering if you drive regularly, have practical CNG access along your routes, and the fuel-cost difference adds up over the time and distance you expect to own the car. Use current local prices and cautious economy assumptions to estimate the difference. There is no universal break-even mileage in the evidence available here; purchase price, fuel rates, actual economy, and ownership period all affect the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much mileage does a Tigor CNG give in real life?

Autocar India reported a 21.35 km/kg CNG average in its Tigor test cycles in May 2022, alongside 12.7 km/l on petrol. Those are historical publication test results, not a guaranteed real-world figure for every used car. Traffic, route, load, driving style, and condition can affect what a driver experiences, so treat the test as a reference and budget conservatively.

Does the Tigor CNG have boot space?

Tata’s 2025 brochure describes twin cylinders below the luggage area but does not state a directly comparable conventional boot-volume figure for iCNG. It lists 419 L for petrol. The brochure’s 70 L cylinder water-capacity figure is not usable gas volume or boot capacity. Inspect the exact iCNG car and try loading the bags or equipment you normally carry.

Is a factory CNG Tigor the same as a converted petrol Tigor?

No. A factory iCNG car and a petrol car converted later are separate cases. For an aftermarket conversion, check the kit and installation documents and whether the RC records the fuel-system change. IRDAI says a fitted CNG/LPG kit should be reported to the registering RTA for notation, and PPAC says a suitable workshop should assess technical suitability. Paperwork alone does not establish the condition of a specific installation.

Which Tigor CNG versions have an AMT?

Tata announced the Tigor iCNG in January 2022 and introduced AMT to its CNG range in February 2024. The 2025 brochure lists manual and AMT iCNG offerings by variant. Check the model year, exact variant, and transmission on the used car and its documents rather than assuming every CNG listing has an AMT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the 2022 Mumbai running-cost figures to decide today?

Use them only as historical context. Autocar India’s May 2022 test included Mumbai fuel prices and rupee-per-kilometre examples, which should not be treated as current prices for your city. Recalculate with current local petrol and CNG rates, your expected economy, the distance you plan to drive, and your likely ownership period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy a petrol or CNG Tigor?

Choose based on mileage, CNG access, luggage needs, and the exact car’s condition and price. Factory iCNG may suit regular drivers with convenient refuelling and a favourable fuel-cost calculation; petrol may better suit lower or unpredictable mileage, boot needs, or a preference for the higher listed output.

Is the Tigor CNG worth it for daily running?

It can be if you drive regularly, can refuel conveniently, and the estimated fuel savings justify any price difference over your ownership period. Use current local prices and conservative economy assumptions; there is no universal break-even mileage.

How much mileage does a Tigor CNG give in real life?

Autocar India reported a 21.35 km/kg CNG average in its May 2022 Tigor test cycles. This is a dated test result, not a guarantee for every used car; route, traffic, load, driving style, and vehicle condition matter.

The Bottom Line

Choose a used factory iCNG Tigor if regular driving, practical CNG access, and a cautious cost calculation make the fuel saving worthwhile—and the exact car checks out. Choose petrol if you drive less, need its listed 419 L boot, prefer the higher brochure output, or value simpler refuelling. In either case, compare like-for-like year, trim, transmission, price, condition, and paperwork. For a converted car, verify the kit documents and RC notation and have the vehicle assessed; do not treat it as equivalent to factory iCNG.
