Before test-driving a used Tata Tiago, check its documents and service history, inspect it in daylight, and ask to hear a cold start. On the road, assess braking, steering, the correct transmission for that car, air conditioning and rattles over bumps. The right checks depend on the Tiago’s model year, fuel type and manual, AMT or EV configuration; a symptom is a reason to investigate, not proof of a model-wide fault.

Before the test drive: establish which Tiago you are inspecting

Record the car’s model year, fuel or powertrain, and transmission before applying variant-specific checks. A manual petrol Tiago, an AMT and an EV do not share every inspection point. The model-specific observations cited below concern particular years or configurations, not every Tiago.

Match the paperwork to the car

  • Ask to see the registration certificate (RC), insurance and pollution-under-control (PUC) certificate. Match the identifying details on the documents to the vehicle.
  • Request service invoices as well as the service booklet. Compare dates and recorded mileage with the odometer; note unexplained gaps, inconsistencies or repairs the seller cannot explain.
  • Check whether a loan hypothecation is still recorded and verify registration details using current official procedures. A general Indian used-car guide recommends these checks; confirm the applicable process rather than relying on an informal account. CarDekho’s used-car inspection checklist.

Inspect the exterior, tyres and underside

View the car dry and in daylight. Compare the gaps around the doors, bonnet and boot. Look for mismatched paint, overspray, dents, corrosion on the sills and wheel arches, and signs of water entry or repair in the boot. These clues can justify a closer inspection but do not, by themselves, prove the extent or cause of prior damage. A visual check cannot rule out hidden accident repairs; a professional may use a paint-thickness gauge.

Check every tyre for cuts, cracks, embedded objects and uneven wear, including the spare. Uneven wear may point to an alignment or suspension issue. Look beneath the car for oil or other fluid traces. Tata’s Tiago owner manual includes tyre condition and fluid traces among routine checks; consult the manual for the exact car. Confirm the controls and safety basics work

With the car stationary, check that warning lamps illuminate and then go out as expected. Test the headlights and other lights, indicators, wipers, horn, gauges, switches, locks, windows, infotainment and air conditioning. Equipment varies by variant, so check what is actually fitted. Make sure a loose floor mat cannot slide forward and obstruct the pedals; the owner manual warns of this safety risk.

Cold start: observe before the engine warms up

If practical, ask the seller not to start the car before you arrive. Watch whether it starts readily and settles into a steady idle. Listen for repeated ticking or other unfamiliar sounds, and note persistent exhaust smoke. One sound or puff of smoke is not a diagnosis: record what you notice and have a mechanic assess it if it persists or comes with other symptoms.

Look in the engine bay for leaks, suspicious staining, coolant level or contamination, and signs of recent cleaning that could make leaks harder to spot. Milky-looking oil is a warning sign that needs professional assessment, not a conclusive diagnosis.

Keep older diesel-specific advice in its proper context

Autocar India’s December 2018 used-car guide is specifically about 2016–2018 Tiago diesels. It recommends checking for dashboard rattles, brake function and fluid leaks, starting trouble, ticking and white exhaust smoke, and raises timing-belt wear in that context. Do not apply a mileage threshold or historical repair estimate from that guide to every Tiago. Check the exact car’s records or Tata service information for its maintenance schedule. Autocar India’s 2016–2018 Tiago diesel guide.

Use diagnostic codes as clues, not verdicts

A 2026 secondary Tiago buying guide flags possible misfire codes in pre-2020 petrol cars and recommends an OBD-II scan. That is a lead to investigate, not evidence that the issue is common across the fleet. If the engine warning lamp is on, the engine runs unevenly or a scan returns codes, ask a mechanic to interpret the codes and inspect the cause before deciding whether to buy. A basic code reader provides only one input to diagnosis. Spinny’s Tiago buying guide.

Road test: what to feel and listen for

Use ordinary city streets and, if available and safe, a faster road. Avoid aggressive manoeuvres. A general used-car inspection guide recommends checking stability, braking, steering pull, air conditioning and gear changes during the drive. CarDekho’s used-car inspection checklist.

Brakes

Brake progressively, then try firmer braking in a clear, safe place. Notice whether the car pulls to one side, the pedal or steering wheel vibrates, braking feels weak, you hear scraping, or a warning lamp appears. The older Tiago diesel guide also calls out brake-fluid leaks and possible premature pad wear as points to inspect. Have any symptom physically checked; a test drive alone cannot establish the cause.

Steering, suspension and cabin noises

Turn through a quiet area and check whether the steering tracks straight and returns normally. Cross a speed breaker or bumpy section slowly. Listen for front-end clunks or thuds, as well as trim squeaks and dashboard or door rattles. Tiago-specific guides mention suspension noise and rattles as things to check, but do not establish fleet-wide fault rates. A noise is a prompt for inspection, not proof of a known universal defect.

Manual transmission

Check that gears select smoothly and the clutch takes up predictably in ordinary starts. If there is a safe, gentle incline, observe a normal hill start. Note judder, slipping, an unusually heavy pedal or difficulty selecting gears, and ask a mechanic to assess any concern.

AMT transmission

Test creeping, low-speed changes, reverse and a hill start only where safe. The feel can differ from a manual and vary with the specific transmission and its condition. Do not label a shift behaviour normal or faulty without identifying the exact variant and getting symptoms assessed professionally.

Air conditioning and electrical equipment

Run the air conditioning while stationary and on the move. Check cooling, fan operation and airflow. Try the infotainment and phone connection, but do not let a working screen distract from the brakes, steering, transmission or other mechanical checks.

After the drive: recheck and decide whether to pause

Park on a suitable surface and look for fresh fluid beneath the car or around the engine bay. Check whether any warning lights have appeared. Compare what you observed with the invoices and service booklet, then ask the seller about unexplained repairs, replaced panels, warning lamps or gaps in the history.

Pause the purchase until an independent mechanic inspects the car if you find inconsistent records, unexplained smoke or noise, braking or steering symptoms, possible accident or flood clues, or warning codes. A professional inspection may include paint-thickness readings, a diagnostic scan and a written report. If you cannot assess the car confidently yourself, an independent inspection is a prudent next step.

Compare two used Tiagos on evidence, not a generic fault list

When choosing between two cars, compare their model years and documented service histories, powertrains and transmission operation, warning-light or code status, accident or flood evidence, tyre and brake condition, suspension noises and maintenance records. The sources available do not establish reliable fault-frequency rankings across all Tiago years and variants, so a single generic list cannot tell you which individual car is the better buy.

What a safety rating can—and cannot—tell you

Tata Motors’ 2023 brochure describes a 4-star Global NCAP adult safety rating for the 2020 Tiago test configuration with two airbags. That result applies to the tested year and configuration; it does not assess the condition, repair history or safety equipment of the particular used car you are inspecting.
