The Maruti Alto 800 is the more conventional small hatchback in the cited comparison. But for a used-car purchase, the better choice is the specific car that fits your routes and passes an independent inspection; model name alone cannot tell you its condition, equipment, safety, or repair needs.
How the Nano and Alto 800 compare in town
Autocar India’s February 2014 head-to-head compared the Nano Twist with the Alto 800 and reported driving them in Mumbai traffic. Its key distinction was steering: power steering gave the Twist a meaningful advantage over earlier Nanos for urban maneuvering. That observation applies to the Twist featured in the article, not every Nano trim or year. Verify the steering equipment on the car you are considering. Autocar India’s comparison is a period review, not a current test of today’s used examples.

Maneuvering and parking
If your regular routes involve narrow lanes, frequent turns, or very tight parking, test each candidate on the kind of streets you actually use. Pay attention to steering effort at low speed, visibility, turning and parking ease, and whether you can place the car confidently. A Nano Twist’s power steering may suit this use particularly well; do not assume a different Nano has the same equipment.
Traffic and everyday driving
There is no like-for-like current fuel-consumption test in the cited sources. Maruti Suzuki’s October 2012 launch announcement claimed 22.74 km/l for the then-new Alto 800 petrol and 30.46 km per kg for its CNG version. Those manufacturer figures are launch-era claims, not expected mileage for an older used car or a comparison with a Nano. The same release cited 69 Nm at 3,500 rpm and described it as helpful for city driving with frequent pickup and gear changes. See Maruti Suzuki’s 2012 announcement. A candidate’s actual consumption depends on its variant, condition, traffic, fuel, and driving.

Passengers and luggage
Match the car to the people and belongings you regularly carry. Do not rely on figures from a different comparison: Autocar India’s 2015 comparison of the GenX Nano AMT and Alto K10 AMT listed 94 litres of boot space for the Nano and 177 litres for the K10, and noted differences in rear-seat belt configurations. Those values are for those specific versions, not a Nano-versus-Alto-800 specification comparison. Read the GenX Nano–Alto K10 comparison, then check the exact cars you are viewing.
Safety deserves a close, vehicle-specific check
Global NCAP’s India results page lists 2014 no-airbag test entries for the right-hand-drive Tata Nano and Maruti Suzuki Alto 800. The organization’s published discussion says the structures of the tested cars were inadequate and involved a high risk of life-threatening injuries. These findings concern those test versions and conditions; they are not a universal rating for every model year or variant. Global NCAP’s India results lists the tested versions, and its 2013 discussion of crash-test results describes the structural concerns.

For each car, verify its actual safety equipment and have a qualified independent inspector assess structural repairs or crash damage, seat belts and restraints, tyres, and roadworthiness. A model badge or a past test result cannot establish the condition of an individual used vehicle.

Arrange an independent inspection and a road test. Ask the mechanic to assess the cold start, clutch and gearbox, brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, leaks, electrical systems, and service records. Test low-speed control and parking yourself, and consider whether passengers and luggage fit comfortably.

Confirm the year, variant, and equipment, including whether a Nano is a Twist and whether it has the steering described in the 2014 comparison. Check registration, ownership, insurance, and any applicable local restrictions against the vehicle’s documents and current local requirements. Compare the negotiated price with the immediate repair work the inspector identifies.
