That puts BYD ahead by 388,001 vehicles, calculated from the companies’ reported totals. The figures compare BYD sales with Tesla deliveries, not identical reporting terms.
What the Q1–Q3 2025 figures show
The comparison covers the same nine-month period and is based on BYD passenger BEV sales versus Tesla vehicle deliveries. The totals below come from company disclosures; the nine-month Tesla total and the gap are calculated from those figures.

BYD’s monthly filing gives the year-to-date passenger BEV figure. Tesla’s reported quarterly deliveries were 336,681 in Q1, 384,122 in Q2 and 497,099 in Q3; together, they total 1,217,902. Why BYD’s broader NEV number is not the BEV comparison
BYD also reported 3,260,146 new energy vehicle (NEV) sales for January–September 2025. That total is broader than BEVs: BYD reports passenger BEVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) as separate categories. For a BEV-focused comparison with Tesla, use BYD’s 1,605,903 passenger BEVs—not the 3,260,146 NEV total. The NEV figure provides context for BYD’s wider electrified-vehicle business, but it is not a like-for-like BEV count. BYD’s filing lists the categories separately.

What “overtakes Tesla in EV sales” means here
“EV sales” can refer to different vehicle categories and measures. This result is precise when stated as BYD passenger BEV sales through September compared with Tesla deliveries over the same three quarters. The geography is global, the time window ends September 30, 2025, and the propulsion category on BYD’s side is passenger BEVs. The companies’ own operational terms differ: BYD reports sales, while Tesla reports deliveries.
BYD’s filing describes its monthly production and sales volumes as unaudited and subject to adjustment. Tesla likewise cautions that deliveries are only one measure of its performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results, which also depend on factors including average selling price, cost of sales and foreign-exchange movements. These operational tallies answer a vehicle-volume question; they do not by themselves establish either company’s revenue, profit, or financial performance.
