Start with how your family will use the SUV
Both are three-row SUVs, but the case for each is different. The GV80’s appeal in the available manufacturer specifications is its more premium-leaning positioning and higher-output engine options. The Highlander’s published specifications make its seating, maximum cargo capacity and towing capability straightforward to evaluate. Those model-year figures are useful context, not a substitute for checking the year, trim, equipment and condition of a used example.

The following figures come from different model years and configurations, so they are reference points—not a direct comparison of every used GV80 and Highlander.

Will the third row and cargo area work for your family?
Try the actual seats, not just the seating count
A third row is useful only if the people who will ride there can get in and sit comfortably. Genesis’s 2024 specifications list 30.3 inches of third-row legroom; the cited third-row cargo figure, 11.6 cu. ft., applies specifically to the 3.5T. Those figures make the GV80’s exact year and trim important. Toyota Canada describes seven- and eight-seat Highlander configurations for its market, but configuration can vary by market and trim. At a test drive, have the family members who will use the third row climb in and sit there. Check access with the second row positioned as it would be on a normal trip, then try installing the family’s actual child seats. Confirm that belts, buckles and access work with the seats fitted.
Measure cargo with the seats you will actually use
Do not compare Toyota’s 84.3-cu.-ft. maximum—measured with the second and third rows folded—to Genesis’s figures behind an occupied row. If your family regularly fills all three rows, load the stroller, sports gear or luggage you typically bring while the third row is up. The available figures do not provide an equivalent behind-third-row capacity for the Highlander, so the most useful comparison is a hands-on check of the particular vehicles.

How do power, fuel economy and towing affect the choice?
The 2025 GV80 figures show a meaningful difference between its listed engines: 300 hp for the 2.5T AWD and 375 hp for the 3.5T Advanced AWD. The 2025 Highlander page lists up to 265 hp. This identifies the published model-year configurations; it does not establish how a used vehicle performs or its reliability.

The cited towing figures are also maximums: up to 6,000 lb with trailer brakes on the 2024 GV80 specification sheet, and up to 5,000 lb on Toyota’s 2025 Highlander page. Before towing, verify the specific vehicle’s rating, equipment and setup, as well as the trailer’s loaded weight.
What safety information can—and cannot—tell you
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the 2025 Highlander as a Top Safety Pick and publishes category-level results. Its page also notes that some ratings apply across multiple model years and that a passenger-side test rating may be based on a Toyota-conducted test. Read the applicability notes alongside any category result: an award is not a complete head-to-head verdict, and the available results do not establish a same-year, same-test comparison with the GV80. For a used vehicle, check the specific year and trim’s safety equipment and inspect the vehicle’s history and condition. Do not infer that one model is safer overall from the partial comparison above.

Price the listings in your market
Consumer Reports displayed an average retail range of $34,300–$49,325 for the 2025 Highlander on its ratings page when retrieved on October 4, 2026. That is a publisher-displayed range, not a local quote, a matched comparison with a GV80 or evidence of what a specific used vehicle should cost. The available evidence does not establish comparable local used prices for both models. Verify remaining coverage by VIN
Genesis publishes a five-year/60,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty and a ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty for original owners of new vehicles. Its certified pre-owned warranty periods begin on the original owner’s purchase date. Those headline terms do not establish what remains on a particular used GV80 or what transfers to a later owner.
