The FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program began reporting flight demonstrations and tests in summer 2026, but that is not the same as launching scheduled, bookable passenger air-taxi service. As of October 4, 2026, the FAA has reported medical-transport testing, a remotely piloted cargo demonstration and state demonstration flights; it has not announced a public booking date for regular paid passenger rides.
What the FAA announced for summer 2026
On March 9, 2026, the Federal Aviation Administration announced eight selected projects spanning 26 states under the Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program, or eIPP. The projects cover a range of concepts, including urban air taxis and regional passenger transport, as well as cargo, emergency medical response, autonomous flight and offshore or energy-sector transport. The FAA said the public would start to see program operations by summer. FAA’s March 9 announcement
That forecast was about activity under a testing and integration program. It did not, by itself, promise that passengers could buy tickets for routine air-taxi routes by summer. “Operations” can mean a demonstration or test flight, and the selected projects include missions that are not passenger services.
What has flown under the program
| Date | Reported activity | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| July 14, 2026 | The FAA reported a medical-transport capability test involving BETA Technologies, United Therapeutics and Pennsylvania DOT. ALIA aircraft were used on a multi-leg route to transfer an organ containment system between aircraft; participants planned additional test flights for the rest of the year. | A medical-transport test took place. The FAA report does not establish scheduled passenger service. FAA July update |
| August 31, 2026 | The FAA reported an Elroy Air and Louisiana DOTD hybrid-electric cargo demonstration at Houma-Terrebonne Airport. It described this as the first remotely piloted aircraft test flight under eIPP. | A cargo demonstration—not a passenger flight—was conducted. FAA August update |
| September 23, 2026 | The FAA reported North Carolina’s first demonstration flight and said it was the fifth location to launch under the initiative, following Texas earlier that month. Further tests were planned. | The release documents demonstration activity at those locations, not a general passenger booking service. FAA September update |
These are specific events reported by the FAA. They do not show that every selected state, proposed route, aircraft or mission is active, or that a listed passenger-transport concept has advanced to scheduled service.

Can you book an air taxi this summer?
The FAA updates cited above do not announce a public booking channel, ticket availability, a regular paid passenger route or a confirmed launch date for such service. The evidence supports saying that eIPP demonstrations and tests began; it does not support saying that ordinary passengers can book program air taxis.
The distinction matters because the initiative includes several mission types. A medical logistics flight, a remotely piloted cargo test and a passenger air taxi are different operations, even when they fall within the same broader advanced-air-mobility program. The FAA’s March announcement included passenger concepts, but announcing a concept is not confirmation that it is carrying paying customers.

What the eIPP is designed to do
The FAA describes eIPP as a real-world environment for public and private participants to test aircraft and operating concepts. The agency says findings will help it understand operational constraints, validate concepts, refine procedures and inform future policy, training and integration. FAA Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau said the partnerships would help the agency understand how to safely and efficiently integrate the aircraft into the National Airspace System. It is an integration and testing initiative within the broader aviation framework, not a blanket exemption from it. What to watch for before calling it passenger service
A future announcement would need to establish more than that a project or location has launched. For a customer-facing air-taxi service, look for confirmation of an actual passenger route, a way for the public to book, and a stated service start. The FAA’s reported eIPP activity through September 2026 does not provide that timetable.
