Toyota’s 2027 GR86 and Nissan’s 2027 Z are updates to current models, not confirmed new generations. Honda, Subaru and Nissan have also shown performance concepts or prototypes, but those displays do not confirm production launches.
What is actually coming?
“Upcoming” covers several different levels of certainty here: a launch target, a scheduled sales year, a model-year update, or a show car with no production date. The distinction matters: a prototype on display is not the same thing as a car with a confirmed sales plan.
| Model | What is announced | Timing and market |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota GR GT | Road-legal flagship in development | Launch targeted around 2027; market availability not stated by Toyota |
| Toyota GRMN Corolla | Limited-quantity performance model | Japan sales scheduled for 2027; Toyota names Japan, North America and Australia as main regions |
| Toyota GR86 | Model-year refinements | 2027 model for the U.S. |
| Nissan Z and Z NISMO | Model-year changes, including a manual option for Z NISMO | 2027 models announced for North America; Nissan’s stated summer 2026 expected-arrival window has passed |
| Honda Prelude HRC Concept | Prelude fitted with performance parts in development | Concept shown; not a new-car launch announcement |
| Subaru WRX STI Sport♯ | Performance prototype | Shown in Japan; production timing not stated in Subaru’s cited release |
| Nissan AURA NISMO RS Concept | Technical-validation concept | Commercialization is an aspiration, not a confirmed production plan |
| Mazda Roadster / Roadster RF | Updates to the existing model | Japanese-market product changes announced in June 2026 |
The confirmed future launches to watch
Toyota GR GT: a road-legal flagship targeted for around 2027
Toyota GAZOO Racing presented the GR GT as a new flagship sports car and described it as a road-legal race car. The displayed vehicle was an under-development prototype, and Toyota said development would continue toward a launch around 2027. The timing is a target, not a confirmed on-sale date.
Toyota’s published figures are prototype development targets measured in-house, not final production specifications: a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with a transaxle-integrated hybrid motor, a newly developed eight-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive, system output of at least 650 PS, weight of 1,750 kg or lower, and top speed of at least 320 km/h. Toyota notes that these targets may change as development continues.

GR GT3: related to the GR GT, but built for racing
The GR GT3 is a separate customer race car Toyota says is based on the GR GT and developed to FIA GT3 specification. It is not the road-going GR GT in race trim. Toyota presented the GR GT, GR GT3 and Lexus LFA Concept together as sports-car flagships; the LFA item is explicitly a concept, not confirmation of a production Lexus replacement.
Toyota GRMN Corolla: limited quantities, Japan sales scheduled for 2027
Toyota describes the GRMN Corolla as a high-performance, limited-quantity model, with Japan, North America and Australia named as its main availability regions. The company said requests for customer sales negotiations in Japan would open around autumn 2026, with sales scheduled for 2027. Toyota says its chassis, aerodynamic, suspension and four-wheel-drive development draws on Super Taikyu racing and Nürburgring testing.

At the announcement, Akio Toyoda, identified by Toyota as Toyota Master Driver Morizo, said: “If it’s going to bear the GRMN name, it needs to be a car that can duly handle the Nürburgring”.
Also in development: five-seat GR Corolla MORIZO RR
Toyota separately says a five-seat GR Corolla MORIZO RR with its GAZOO Racing Direct Automatic Transmission is under development. Toyota had not determined reveal or launch dates, so it should not be treated as having the GRMN Corolla’s scheduled 2027 sales status.

Model-year updates, not new generations
2027 Toyota GR86: U.S. refinements
Toyota’s U.S. announcement describes focused changes to the 2027 GR86, including smoother throttle response and an improved feel on the fifth-to-fourth downshift. It does not announce an all-new generation. For context rather than as a forecast, Toyota reported in August 2026 that approximately 110,000 GR86 units had been delivered since the model launched in 2021.
2027 Nissan Z: a manual option for Z NISMO
Nissan announced North American changes for the 2027 Z and Z NISMO, including a manual-transmission option for the 420-horsepower Z NISMO. That power figure is a Nissan specification, not an independently verified test result. Nissan’s release gave summer 2026 as the expected arrival window; as of October 8, 2026, that window has passed, but the cited release does not establish whether customer deliveries have started. Nissan said pricing would be announced closer to launch.

Concepts and prototypes: interesting, but not confirmed launches
Honda Prelude HRC Concept
Honda said the Prelude went on sale in September 2025 and that it was developing HRC Performance Parts for the car. The HRC Concept shown by Honda is a Prelude equipped with those parts, not a separate production-car announcement. Honda described its aim as the “joy of driving at the will of the driver” and said it wants to bring racing and sports-car development technologies into production models.
Subaru WRX STI Sport♯
Subaru displayed the WRX STI Sport♯ as a prototype at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 among special-edition and motorsport vehicles. The cited announcement does not give it a production date, so the display is not confirmation that a production STI model is returning.

Nissan AURA NISMO RS Concept
Nissan describes this as a technical-validation concept using the AURA NISMO body and the X-TRAIL NISMO power unit. The company said it was considering racing participation and aiming toward complete-car commercialization. That language signals an ambition, not a committed production plan or launch date.
Mazda Roadster: a refresh of the current car
Mazda’s June 2026 announcement covers product improvements to the Japanese-market Roadster and Roadster RF, rather than a new generation. Changes include suspension tuning, Bilstein dampers on specified trims, revised manual-transmission acceleration response and heel-and-toe assistance, and touchscreen operation for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Mazda listed Japanese prices of 2,959,000–4,070,000 yen for the Roadster and 3,850,000–4,697,000 yen for the Roadster RF. These are Japan-market list prices and should not be read as U.S. Miata pricing.
Quick Recap
How to read the announcements
- For the clearest new flagship: the GR GT has a stated target around 2027, but its performance figures remain prototype development targets.
- For a scheduled limited-run performance model: the GRMN Corolla has a 2027 Japan sales schedule; availability and timing elsewhere are not specified to the same level.
- For updates to familiar cars: follow the 2027 U.S. GR86 and North American Z announcements as model-year changes, not evidence of new generations.
- For concepts and prototypes: treat the Prelude HRC Concept, WRX STI Sport♯ and AURA NISMO RS as development or display vehicles unless their makers announce production plans.
- For an existing-car refresh: Mazda’s Roadster announcement concerns updated Japanese-market models, not a confirmed next-generation MX-5.
