Friends and family mourned 20-year-old P-plater Uneque Murphy after a single-car crash on Tonkin Highway in Maddington on Saturday, 25 September 2021. Contemporary reports said her white Holden Commodore left the road, struck a tree and caught fire. The reports did not establish what caused the crash.
What happened in the Maddington crash
PerthNow reported that Murphy was driving on Tonkin Highway in Maddington at about 7:10pm on Saturday, 25 September 2021, when her white Holden Commodore left the road and struck a tree. She was the car’s sole occupant and suffered fatal injuries. The vehicle caught fire, and passing motorists were unable to save her, according to the report. PerthNow’s report, published 26 September 2021, and 7NEWS’s report, published 27 September 2021, covered the crash and tributes.
Who was Uneque Murphy?
Contemporary reports described Murphy as 20 and a P-plater who had obtained her licence only months before the crash. PerthNow said she had recently celebrated her 20th birthday; 7NEWS said she had recently turned 20.
Tributes from friends and family
Friends and family shared tributes on social media after Murphy’s death. 7NEWS identified Ayden Perkins as her boyfriend and reported that he wrote: “RIP my beautiful queen, I honestly can’t believe you are gone,” 7NEWS reported. PerthNow also quoted an unnamed friend’s remembrance: “Such a beautiful girl taken way too early”. PerthNow reported the tribute.

What is known about the cause?
The contemporary reports describe the car leaving the road but do not establish why it happened, assign fault or provide a later investigative finding. Police were seeking witnesses and mobile-phone or dash-cam footage when the reports were published in September 2021. That was a request at the time, not evidence of the investigation’s eventual outcome.
The West Australian’s September 2021 report also covered the crash and the mourning by Murphy’s family and friends.
