Is UK diesel really almost £11 per gallon?
Fuel Finder UK’s index reported an average UK B7 diesel price of 199.8p per litre on 11 October 2026, based on accepted station prices from the preceding 14 days and data covering 5,789 stations. Converted to an imperial gallon—about 4.546 litres—that is approximately £9.08. The £9.08 figure is a conversion from the index’s per-litre price, not a separate published statistic. Fuel Finder is a secondary price index, so this dated figure should not be treated as an official national statistical release.

A US gallon is smaller than an imperial gallon, so a price stated per gallon must identify which measure it uses. Motorists looking for current prices at individual stations can use the government’s Fuel Finder guidance.

What tax is charged on diesel?
Diesel is subject to two different taxes: VAT, which is calculated as a percentage, and Fuel Duty, which is a fixed amount per litre. HMRC’s general guidance, accessed 11 October 2026, says most vehicle fuel is subject to standard-rate VAT of 20% and lists diesel Fuel Duty at 52.95p per litre. The 5% reduced VAT rate mentioned in the guidance applies to domestic heating fuel, not ordinary road diesel.

Has the government announced a road-diesel VAT cut?
The cited HMRC guidance sets out the standard 20% rate for most vehicle fuel; it does not announce a VAT cut for road diesel. The VAT Act text cited here excludes road fuel gas subject to excise duty from the reduced-rate domestic-fuel category. That means a lower VAT rate for road diesel would require a policy and legal change; it is not simply an extension of the existing reduced rate for domestic heating fuel. The statutory text is a point-in-time excerpt, so it should not be read as a complete account of any later legal changes.

What is changing with Fuel Duty?
HMRC’s policy paper, published 22 May 2026, lists the following heavy-oil (diesel) Fuel Duty rates for 2026–27. It also says the legislative default is a return to Budget 2025 levels from 1 January 2027 and that Budget 2026 would confirm final rates. The figures below are therefore the schedule in that paper, not confirmation that no later Budget decision has changed them.

This is a Fuel Duty schedule, not a VAT change. The final rates should be checked against any subsequent Budget update before relying on them.

Would a VAT cut make diesel cheaper?
A lower VAT rate would reduce the tax calculated on the applicable VAT base, but the evidence cited here does not establish how much of a cut would appear in forecourt prices. It also does not quantify the cost to the public finances or show which households would benefit most. Those outcomes depend on policy design and price-setting; no specific saving or pass-through rate can be stated from the available figures.
For a sound proposal, decision-makers would need to specify the new rate, its legal basis and start date, then assess likely retail pass-through, distributional effects and revenue cost. The dated diesel-price index and HMRC’s tax guidance establish the current snapshot and tax structure, but do not answer those impact questions.
