That is a projection about a specific vehicle group and city—not a prediction that every car will be stolen, that the “Kia Boys” social-media trend will last until then, or that the same timeline applies nationwide.
What the 2042 forecast actually says
The forecast comes from a study of Hyundai Sonata theft patterns in Los Angeles. The model projects thefts staying elevated over baseline levels through at least 2042, then declining to negligible levels between 2043 and 2050 as vulnerable cars become rare through scrapping. The American Statistical Association (ASA) summarized the forecast on September 1, 2026; The Drive’s October 2026 account also describes the projected decline.
The study’s forecast horizon runs through 2050. “16 years” is the interval from the 2026 coverage date to 2042, not a guarantee about what will happen in that year. A model forecast is also not a current theft rate: the available summaries do not provide the detailed uncertainty intervals or full validation results needed to treat its endpoint as certain.
Why thefts could persist after the trend’s peak
The long tail is explained by the cars, not by an assumption that a viral trend stays popular. The researchers model how vulnerable vehicles enter the fleet, remain in use, receive security changes, and are eventually scrapped. Even under reasonable assumptions about recall completion, the ASA summary says a remaining pool of older vulnerable Sonatas could keep thefts elevated.

Used-car sales can also change where those vehicles are found. As older cars move between owners and neighborhoods, areas that shed them earlier may see a different theft pattern from places where they remain in circulation longer. This is a fleet-life-cycle explanation for the forecast, not evidence that a particular buyer, neighborhood, or income level causes theft.
How the forecast differs across Los Angeles
The ASA summary describes different timing across the city’s West and South Bureaus. West Bureau thefts peaked around 2023, while South Bureau thefts are projected to peak around 2027 and linger longer. The contrast is consistent with the study’s account of older at-risk vehicles moving through the used-car market; it should not be read as a national pattern.

The same ASA summary reports median household incomes of near $88,000 in West Bureau and near $57,000 in South Bureau. Those figures provide context for the areas described; they do not establish that income causes vehicle theft or quantify an individual owner’s risk.
Does this mean every Kia or Hyundai is vulnerable?
No. The ASA summary says some vulnerable Kia and Hyundai models sold between 2011 and 2021 lacked engine immobilizers, a security feature that can prevent a vehicle from starting without the correct key. That broad range is not a complete list of affected models, trims, or vehicles, and the study’s headline forecast specifically concerns vulnerable Hyundai Sonatas in Los Angeles.

Do not assume your car is affected—or protected—based only on its make and year. Check your vehicle identification number (VIN) with the manufacturer to see whether a recall or security software update applies. The sources summarized here do not provide a complete model-by-model eligibility list.
What owners can do now
- Check eligibility by VIN. Use the automaker’s recall and security-update lookup for your specific vehicle, then follow any applicable instructions.
- Use a physical deterrent if appropriate. UCLA coverage reports lead author Jeffrey Brantingham recommending a steering-wheel lock. It is practical advice, not a guarantee against theft; check that any lock fits your vehicle. The coverage does not compare brands or models.
- Consider the vehicle’s security equipment. An engine immobilizer is relevant to theft prevention, but the summaries do not quantify how much it changes risk for a particular vehicle or situation. If replacing a car, consider whether the vehicle has one.
These steps address an owner’s individual vehicle; the Los Angeles forecast cannot tell you the present theft rate for your car, neighborhood, or city.

What the study does—and does not—establish
The ASA summary cites P. J. Brantingham, C. D. Uchida, F. Morstatter, and G. Mohler’s paper, “Forecasting the impact of the viral ‘Kia Boys’ social media trend on car thefts to 2050,” in the International Journal of Forecasting (DOI: 10.1016/j.ijforecast.2026.07.006). The journal’s formal publication year is not stated consistently in the available citation details, so the study is best identified by its title and DOI rather than assigned a definitive year here.
The result is useful for understanding how older vulnerable vehicles can sustain a local problem after its initial surge. It is not a forecast for every Kia or Hyundai, a projection for all U.S. cities, or evidence that the online trend itself will continue for 16 years.
